All single handed over the last 15 years
About 4-5 times I have sailed out of Bradwell & been seasick by the time I have got to the Knoll & had to turn back. Once so bad that I have just dropped the mainsail into the cockpit, put out 3 fenders called for help docking, fallen into my bunk early evening & slept right round to the following morning. Once I was so bad I was sailing with the aeries steering & I could do nothing & i was crossing felixtowe shipping lane before I could turn the boat round & set the aeries again. Fortunately the wind changed & the aeries steered me back to the baffle off the power station. By this time the tide had turned & there was enough water to get back into the marina, tie up & crawl into my bunk. The boat sailed itself for most of the way there & back with limited input from me, the wind just changed to suit whilst I lay in the cockpit unable to move.
On another trip to Ostend from Bradwell, I was just past the Longsand Head & there was the usual big sea there in F6. I started to feel queasy so headed back to Shotley
Seasickness is my biggest concern every time. I have often arrived at Ostend having chucked up 7-8 times & almost incapable of tying up without help.
The only trip I can recall turning back due to weather was Ostend to Bradwell & i turned back after the first 40 mins as it was obviously more than the forecast F6

Lovely summer's day, F2 gusting 2 1/2 and gently ambling from Brighton to Chichester when a SW gale warning for sea area Wight came through. Shortly followed by an incredulous yachty asking CG to confirm what they had just said. Gale warning - soon. We had planned one of those gentle sails where the mug of tea can be put down anywhere without spilling and a lazy sail in the sunshine, due to arrive at the Looe channel at about the earliest time the gale was due and another hour or two to Chichester bar. Debated what the hell to do and finally put engine on and motored hard to get into Chi marina about earliest time gale due.

Perfect day and evening but at one in the morning an almighty thunderstorm that raged all round Chichester harbour and torrential rain. Got soaked putting the cockpit tent up while crew slumbered peacefully on. When he saw my soaked pj's hanging out to dry he got the story and thought it was the funniest thing he'd heard in years. (The rat).
