Have we lost JFM?

Probably as good an example as any of the sort of irrelevant, childish posts that can plague the boating parts of these fora. The wordplay would probably delight a slightly dim 12 year old. One definite improvement in the new software is the improved ignore function though.

a good example of unpleasantness hat we can well do without on the mobo forum!

Mby sadly have no real interest in this forum.

There is a technical issues forum and all the issues go unresponded to

The last forum software was used by many and worked well ... but mby didn’t understand it so scrapped that and put another in its place that basically did the same thing. They don’t understand this one either.

Upgrading software is fine but you need to understand what your users want. Social media/ Facebook / what’s app etc offers supreme ease of use and engagement. Neither replace a forum ( they are hard to search ) but there is much to learn.

People want private groups, easy photo sharing ( this is better) etc.

I am now a member of several Facebook groups ( fairline, Mallorca etc ) who can give amazing specific advise. I am also in a Whats app group with my fiends on here which is a combo of the forum and the lounge. There is a big social element. Holidays, retirements and more.

When mby Redid the site they had that option but chose same old same old.

I don’t think the forum is dead far from it but it is now just a part of the picture.

Such a shame mby could not care less about it

I dunno, the new forum software seems loads better than the old one to me. The old one was rubbish, didn't work properly when editing posts on mobile browser, you always ended up accidentally deleting your post for example.

There must be something wrong with this new one though because you lot wouldnt be complaining for no reason, but obviously whatever it is isn't affecting me.

Works well on my iPad. Pictures are dead easy to upload.....now I’ve figured out how the set the file size.

I mainly insult the welsh neighbours so any platform for that will do

I’ll start laying the mines in April then ???

Safari on my Macbook cannot get on with the new forum, I routinely get the Apple Pie of death spinning away, so I have installed Firefox which hamdles it OK, but Safari is seamless on the Mac for virtually every other site I visit.

Still getting used to the oldest post first (defaut and now only) format, having spent all my years here set up for newsest post first, but one advanatge is that it does take you directly to the latest post when you re-look at a thread.

The PMs do not stand out, but perhaps because I haven't set it up properly.

The content and variety is definitely a lot less, although I do feel on PBO page at least, this is because certain 'experts' have alienated many of the established contributors with their 'I am right so shut up' attitude. I now rarely respond to electrical advice requests - fed up with the critique for simply trying to help.

+1 exactly the same issue for me same set up.

I did try deleting all cookies not help that much

I haven't got any complaints about the new Forum - it seems to work very well for me with Chrome using a Lenovo laptop.
And it is so much easier now to post photos and attachments - just literally 'attach' and that is it.
And there seems to be no limit on the number of private messages you can have in your box now - previously I was on the limit (around 200 then I think).

That's what I do! On Chrome for Android, btw.
I never bothered checking is there is an option on this specific forum - or any other, for that matter.
Consistency, yet again...!

Yep, I agree with all that.
But I still find it difficult to use.
I'm not a fan of Facebook and I use WhatsApp reluctantly.
I was actually wondering if JFM felt the same and thats why he wasn't posting but it seems he is very busy at the moment.

I think that the font size could be the blame for most of the issues.
None of us are getting older and, for me, the words are too small.
Yes, I know I can zoom my browser but why should I.
Modern RWD (Responsive Web Design) allows you to target mobile and desktop systems differently.
I'm currently reworking www.scmchat.com using RWD and learning lessons from these YBW forums on what not to do.
For these YBW forums, I just don't think enough thought has gone into its implementation.

That said, some of the improvements are good - extended PM allowance and photo upload etc.

As I say I will keep plugging on but I am finding it difficult - particularly on a mobile device when the adverts also get in the way and often slow the site down so much that I don't bother and come back another time.
I'm sure that the adverts bring in a fair bit of income but is it necessary - after all, the main aim of this site is to promote and enhance the printed magazines.
Surely on the big scheme of things, the ads aren't that essential, especially if you start to loose your customers.

The forum is a responsive design, or at least it is on my android phone.

And with regards to ads I use brave browser which automatically blocks ads and various cookies, its very good, give it a try.

I'm not a fan of Facebook and I use WhatsApp reluctantly.

Mike, have you actually taken a look at a Facebook Group. I have a Fairline one with 1200 members now, over a 1000 of whom are active (reading posts, commenting, liking, etc). I think it works rather well for special interest groups. The searching works too. Your problem is that you like to include other bit and pieces on SCMCHAT that you couldn't do on Facebook. But you do run the risk of persisting with a Forum and then someone creates a Facebook Group and everyone starts using that instead.

J,

What exactly do you think they should have replaced the old forum with? You wanted some Social Media features (easier photo uploading) that they have delivered.

I have not looked at what is out there, but all they have done is replaced one forum software they did not understand at a technical level with another - so I can't see what they have achieved given the change, outage and no doubt cost.

The old software powers thousands of forums - so that was not the issue. It was not great on photos - but it was MBY who limited the storage to 20 photos or so not the software.

So if I was going to procure new software, pay people to install it etc etc - which all told might cost you £10 will have cost Time Inc something daft by the time that have been via legal, compliance and all sorts I would have looked at the market, what my users needed, what I needed as an owner and then come up with a plan.

Pistonheads is not a totally fair comparison as there are many more Aston Marina owners than say Fairline, but they seek to bring together interest groups.

The users want the ease of use they have come to expect of Social Media. Facebook being a prime example. Facebook also has an app which enhances the user experience.

Users want to chat with their friends. Many on here have personal friendships that have been forged o the forum / boat shows

Users want relevant content. Facebook does that in that you follow things so you only see what you want

The owners of the forum want free compelling content in order to drive views which drives advertising.

If it were me I would desire simplicity. Who reads the editorial on the website? I suspect no one -so I would want to integrate that into my content

MBY is advertising funded - but lets you sell for free - but only to £400. This makes no sense. Let people advertise what they want but monetise it. £20 to promote a boat to boat owners is a no brainer for a seller. Make it £50, £100? Cheaper than brokerage

I would put in place a trade directory with reviews. How many people ask for recommendations of trades xxx on here? Lots. Monetise it

I don't have time to go on, but looking at needs you wold not just spend £££ to reinvent the rather wobbly wheel
