Have I got news for you

Re: How to win friends and.......

[ QUOTE ]
The humor was directed at some of the inane questions which seem to come from the same person who needs the trick cyclist rather than me.Goodbye. I am out of here for good.

[/ QUOTE ]

It certainly didnt seem funny - I looked for a sense of humour in the post, and didnt see one. It seemed deadly serious.

One of the inane questions was from me, so I assume you mean me...... but one of the other questions was from Lemain, so do you mean him.... etc.....

Usually, when a post appears serious, and is taken seriously, but was meant in humour, a retraction and a bit of an apology is made.....you made a bit of a retraction, but went on to compound the insults.

so I am having difficulty believeing it was meant in humour.

Re: How to win friends and.......

Richard, I think you'll find that he likes to get a reaction but having been outed as a troll he will disappear and come back with a different log-on. He will then target the same people in much the same way, until people stop rising to his bait. That is his way of enjoying himself.

Re: How to win friends and.......

I know... I just cant help it, particularly when it gets personal. I even put him on ignore, but wanted to see what he was saying, so took him off - big mistake!

Re: How to win friends and.......

A twat is a twat, I dont care if he gets his jollies winding people up or not!

As has been said here many times, if he spoke to me like that in a pub or somewhere, he'd need to ram a toothbrush up his arse to clean his teeth!

This comment is not intended for just one contributor!
Surely all of this back biting, bitchiness, sarcasm & distinct lack of wit should be confined to the appropriate link. Unfortunately one has to sift through the dross to get, occasionally, to the interesting & informative bits.

Exactly!

as I said, "it's the internet"

Re: How to win friends and.......

Normally not a lot of dross on this forum, mainly good stuff, useful data. But you're opinion is of course yours.

Time out guys remeber sticks and stones.
Just laugh at him.
Most of the stuff on here I find interesting.
You dont have to read what you dont like just click on some thing else.

Re: How to win friends and.......

Still not found them?? Jeeze what a night that was! Might be back down next week, for another round!!

[/ QUOTE ]It's not that I 'don't like' what he wrote. The man made a direct personal attack on me (and others) - I don't just 'not click' on it if someone does that to me.

Actually, I wasn't going to make any further posts unless he came back into this thread, but your post did need a reply so unless he takes it further, as far as I am concerned, that's now the end of it.

i agree - and it is difficult to make a decent effort (say) on these forums as you do - and just "ignore" the unpleasant stuff. "not reading" stuff isn't an option, really.

Best is ignore them, move on, report them to moderator and they will be gratifyingly banned in the fullness of time.

It is certainly not the case of course that any such types have a "wide" circle of friends. There are not that many dickheads in the med, nor anywhere. Or alternatively of course - there are - but naturally neither you nor most people on these forums will have ever come across them.

Okay enough is enough
Richard_Faulkner_M44 said 'it's the internet'. No gripes with you, sir BUT. a) this is the liveaboard link (does this mean we have to be misbehaved, spoilt school boys?) b) Real sailing folk don't normally behave in this manner. c) with the amount of posts most of these forumites have it's difficult to believe they are ever sailing (liveaboards-yes with access to the 'internet' on a semi permanent basis). I am ashamed to say I should have ignored this but there comes a point where something needs to be said. If this forum is used to these outpourings them I'm sorry. I am relatively new to this and so I have read through the 'posts' of all the 'users'. I have to say INMHO that 'aph' had some useful comments, latterly however they seem to have become more 'abrupt & pointed'. Has anyone wondered why this is? Everyone has an opinion, surely? Or is this a 'boys' club? Please inform & I watch/read with interest.

I also have been following these posts and I must say these guys seem to have a very thin skin to get so upset. All the bloke was trying to do was take the mick out of a few waffling poms.

I agree ozcruiser. Sad these thin skinned types are now on the Livaboard forum whinging.

The original poster was quite correct is some crap spilling over here now.

For example the 'main one is talking loads of plausible sounding but crap advuice on various tech matters and is otherwise paranoid obsessive stuff and seems while cruising being able to buy stuff from home and be in a marina with a "UK Shop" nearby is important to him. Livabord cruzer huh!

Just one example of the dross getting on here from the other forii. Pity that livaboard seems to be going the way of the others now.

Very good, coming from two new users who have contributed sweet Fanny Adams to this forum.

I predicted that he would be back with a new logon, and here he is. Trolls often work in pairs or groups and target people who bite. They really are the bottom-feeders of the online world, piss-takers, stirrers. I suspect if comes from jealousy and lack of self esteem.

It would be easy for the developers of forum software to incorporate the poster's IP address along with the post - that would go a long way towards exposing those who use multiple logons for what they are. These two new posters are very likely to be the OP alone or the OP and his chum.

Meanwhile for some light reading, this is from the Wiki....

[ QUOTE ]
Trolls can be existing members of a community that rarely post and often contribute no useful information to the thread, but instead make argumentative posts in an attempt to discredit another person, more often than not based on what they thought was said rather than what was actually said by the other person, concentrating almost exclusively on facts irrelevant to the point of the conversation, with the intent of provoking a reaction from others. The key element under attack by a troll is the forum or group's recognized and agreed upon power structure. To this extent, a troll does not necessarily have to make malicious or incorrect comments. For example, a person with political point of view A who approaches a forum frequented by people with political point of view B, may be considered a troll, even if no lies or attacks are made.

A person who retaliates (using whatever means) as a result of a misunderstanding (or as a way of rebelling against the overzealous application of rules) is not a troll. A troll is a person who approaches a board with the specific intention of stirring things up, either with no particular motive or provocation in mind, other than to be purely destructive or if the motive or provocation is against the ethos of the board.
[ QUOTE ]

And as for multiple identies, we get again from Wiki...........

[ QUOTE ]
Trolling is a game about identity deception, albeit one that is played without the consent of most of the players. The troll attempts to pass as a legitimate participant, sharing the group's common interests and concerns; the newsgroups members, if they are cognizant of trolls and other identity deceptions, attempt to both distinguish real from trolling postings, and upon judging a poster a troll, make the offending poster leave the group. Their success at the former depends on how well they — and the troll — understand identity cues; their success at the latter depends on whether the troll's enjoyment is sufficiently diminished or outweighed by the costs imposed by the group.

Trolls can be costly in several ways. A troll can disrupt the discussion on a newsgroup, disseminate bad advice, and damage the feeling of trust in the newsgroup community. Furthermore, in a group that has become sensitized to trolling — where the rate of deception is high — many honestly naïve questions may be quickly rejected as trollings. This can be quite off-putting to the new user who upon venturing a first posting is immediately bombarded with angry accusations. Even if the accusation is unfounded, being branded a troll is quite damaging to one's online reputation." (Donath, 1999, p. 45)

[/ QUOTE ]

But the OP is not just a troll, he is also a flamer...............

[ QUOTE ]
Flaming is the act of sending or posting messages that are deliberately hostile and insulting, usually in the social context of a discussion board on the Internet. Such messages are called flames, and are sometimes posted in response to flamebait. Flaming is said by some to be one of a class of economic problems known as The Tragedy of the Commons, when a group holds a resource (in this case, communal attention), but each of the individual members has an incentive to overuse it. Flamers usually call their flames justified attacks.

Although the trading of insults is as old as human speech, flaming on the Internet, like many other online 'actions,' started in the Usenet hierarchies (although it was known to occur in the WWIVnet and FidoNet computer networks as well). A flame may have elements of a normal message, but is distinguished by its intent. A flame is typically not intended to be constructive, to further clarify a discussion, or to persuade other people. The motive for flaming is often not dialectic, but rather social or psychological. Sometimes, flamers are attempting to assert their authority, or establish a position of superiority. Other times, the flamer is simply a closed-minded or biased individual whose conviction that theirs is the only valid opinion leads them to personally attack any "dissenters." Occasionally, flamers wish to upset and offend other members of the forum, in which case they are trolls.
