I keep reading about airfilters possibly causing problems with engines but, for the life of me, I cant see one on my engine - I guess there must be one, and it will definitely need changing.

Ant thoughts?

I've owned three different marine diesels - 2 Volvos and 1 Nanni and none have had air filtration elements. They have all had a housing which may have some silencing role but no filter. I queried this with my marine engineering guru who said that you don't need filtration as you wouldn't get dust down there in the engine compartment. My current VP2002 is 20 years old and seems fine so maybe he's right.

We've got a thin piece of foam (akin to a microphone muffler) streched over a large spring which sits on the air inlet (Perkins M35). Seems to do the job - but have never changed it, look at it quite a lot as its right in eye line when you get to the engine and its never looked like it needs a clean or replacement.

Yes you have two or three depending on how many cylinders so obviously they are not getting any maintenance. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

What do you think those cans are that the engine breaths through??????? They do not have paper elements however they are wire mesh filters and do require cleaning from time to time and resoaking in oil.

Still a bit lost... some say no filter, you say 2 or 3.... I have 4 cylinders.

There is a black thing with holes in it, but I always thought it was something to do with the water cooling system:

It's that mushroom shaped cap on the end of the induction manifold. Back left of the engine. Probably wire mesh/foam - should be cleaned once in a while.

I think that's as much there to keep down the noise of the intake roar as anything. Worth cleaning I suspect. The 2030 has a coarse wire mesh cover over the intake that wouldn't stop any dust but would stop a rag getting sucked down.

I have a Perkins Prima M50 - same engine - and the air inlet is indeed through the "black mushroom". It has only a coarse metal mesh and neither filter nor foam. It tends to get oily due to the crankcase breather connection, but it's simple to remove and clean.

I've never had an air filter on a marine diesel but I do have one on the little Kuboto generator. It never gets dirty though.

Looks like they economise...one rubr cased??????? MAybe it is oiled wire mesh. Can you get close enough to see.

It certainly appears to be an inlet manifold.

There should be a foam block behind the coarse mesh. There is on my 2020B, and the 2030 manual shows the same mesh cover. Later versions had a foam microphone type external cover.
