Just bid successfully for a Raymarine RC400 chartplotter on ebay for £301.

Now I know I am probably being paranoid but the item says 'unwanted gift' but looking on the sellers previous items (only an ebay member since January) it seems he sold a similar one last month.

I bid on this at the last minute without checking all the history so prob my fault. Have I been stupid? I haven't paid for it yet.

If you are lucky it might be that the last sale fell through so he offered it again this time, I'd pay by Paypal then if there are any problems you might be able to get your money back from them
 
A case of "Caveat emptor"! Seeing as how the one sold in December for £225 and you've paid £301!!! You just have to wait and see if it arrives, but you do get £500 worth of cover, if you paid by Pay Pal.

Saying you've not paid is not an excuse, you bid, you won, you pay up!
 
whether hes got one or 20 doesn't alter what it is. Still a good bit of kit. He may have bought a job lot to sell on, and thinks the "unwanted gift" tag sounds better. ask him! You don't have grounds to refuse payment though. Echo recommendations about paypal however.

With respect Dave I'd think about refusing payment if I'd belatedly realised that the description may be wrong.

If in doubt refer to the seller and if not satisfied to Ebay. I think that the trade description act should cover the problem.
Don't pay until you're satisfied the goods for sale are bona fide.

I know where you are coming from, and email clarification by the seller is due, but you don't yet know if the description is inaccurate. Just because there is more than one doesn't mean there is anything wrong with it, or that it is not as described. Like some one else here said, the first sale may have fallen through. You need to talk to the guy.
 
The other one he has 'sold' might be the same plotter that he had another ebayer mate bidding up for him and didn't reach the price he wanted? For the price it's got to be worth a trip out to collect, if it's not too far, to put your mind at ease and try before you buy.

"Might" being the operative word. I know someone who paid by Paypal for a camcorder. Item simply didn't turn up and seller disappeared. Paypal no use whatsoever, will only refund if money in sellers Paypal account to take, which clearly there never will be.

However he did pay the money to Paypal via credit card, and they coughed up.
 
Fortunate to get the money back from the credit card Co, they usually treat Paypal as a cash advance rather than purchase
 
Seen these for sale in America for around $370 dollars so it doesn't sound like it to big a bargain to be false. Good advise from the others, covers this.
 
General point. If he'll take a cheque he's got a bank account. If he's got a bank account (or card etc) he can use paypal. Why won't he use it? It's not like the charges are high. For what its worth, I certainly wouldn't send a cheque to an unknown 3rd party. As it represents a hefty saving, go and collect it. At least that way you can ensure it works before parting with hard one beer tokens.

Edit. Don't forget, unless you've already got compatible chart cards, it's another £120 - £200 (ish) to get any real benefit.
 
collect / test / cash / - take a spare batteriy and a couple of crockodile clips with you if you cant access the cars battery easily.

if the guy has a problem with you collecting for cash then pull out - he can't realistically expect cash (and cheque in advance is cash in effectively this contect) for this amount.

It's the "unwanted gift" claim that I'd persue. I wouldn't part with cash before I was sure of it. Either through the seller or Ebay.
