General Response....

If you go into an outdoor shop, you will still see hundreds of paper maps. Yes, GPS exists and can be used but mainly for fixes. Route planning usually involves guides and maps, it is half the fun.

I guess another question is what else is a chart table used for?

Nowadays primary uses seem to include a reading desk (for all those electronics manuals), and a laptop table.

So although you may be prepared to forgo a chart table for charts, maybe you want to retain it for other purposes?

I like my chart table as it has my yeoman on it,but also use a platic covered plywood "mobile" one in the cockpit the size of the folio or dutch charts.I also use a small one with A4 size prints side by side which I print off the Imray CD charts.I have routes & waypoints shown on these which are useful when crossing North sea for landfall buoys etc
