I read in a Hatteras article, that the 53ft M/Y was popular because anything bigger seemed to need a professional captain. Then the company managed to fit the space of the 60ft deckhouse onto the 58ft M/Y hull, which increased the living area in a big way without requiring a crew, giving the 58ft Extended Deckhouse model.

Is there something 'easily-manageable' about the 53ft Hatteras, which her slightly bigger sisters don't share? They all look too big to fend off from the pontoon by hand!

Where is the overall-length point in the Hatteras range, when miles-per-gallon become gallons-per-mile? :biggrin-new: Sorry. I love 'em, but if I ever own one, she'll just be my île flottante.

My 54 weighs in at 34 ton at 19ft high it also attracts a lot of wind, one of the biggest issues I have is that the deck is about five foot from pontoons, we always have three crew on deck and plenty of fenders.

We did have two A6 fender buoys but at swanick Monday we blew One when it ripped on a cleat

We also don't have any thrusters

2000 odd years after Archimedes had his eureka moment in the bath, people are still struggling to remember that displacement weight and 'crane lifting' weight are identical.

A boat that displaces 25 tons, weighs exactly 25 tons.

On the other hand, weights given by crane indicators or dials are completely fictitious. Only if there is a calibrated load cell between the hook and boat can a crane give any sensible idea of the weight it is lifting.

What sort of shafts angle does the boat have? The props must push almost as much upward as forward....

Must confess, I don't really understand the weight terms, the crane lift out weight (last month) was just under 25tons, I have a document and a carved plaque on the boat stating "RT 43 Tonnes" (RT=Registered Tonnage?) I thought this to be displacement?
