For some reason my Lewmar hatches don't have blinds on them to keep the sun out when the boat isn't being used. To date I have improvised by putting alumnium foil over the fly screens which, to be honest, is a bit rubbish although reasonably effective.

Is there something else I could use instead as I rather not need to install separate blinds?

My boat came with hatch covers made from the same stuff as all the other canvas work. Total blackout, it is brilliant, we can sleep during the day and the boat stays cool when the sun actually makes an appearance. If we need light we just open the side curtains.

We fitted the oceanair skyscreen on the hatches in the two main cabins. completely blackout and work well, although they are not flush, we have been happy with the aesthetics and the effectiveness.

Oceanair do two types, either roller blind style or framed 2 way, blind one and mozzy screen the other. Either works well as blinds, but latter is much neater but also more expensive. Have had both types.

I have just fitted the roller type in the for cabin and the "framed" one (custom made with a liner for the tunnel) to the saloon hatch. As you say, both work well but the saloon one is much neater and 3 times the money.

Same here, A big advantage is that the covers keep the UV off the perspex significantly prolonging their life.

I had some external covers made, they are held in place by U shaped brass clips that bend over the rim of the hatch. They work well, as you can open the hatch without disturbing the cover.
