Hullo fonts of all sailingknowedge, I hope you can advise? I have two leaky hatches. The hatch glass seats on a black masticky like substance that appears to be acting like putty in a frame. This black stuff is slightlysticky and pliable, like old chewing gum and blows bubbles when pressed. Is it feasable to remove the glass from the frame as all that seems to be holding it is this sticky black mastic. Could I then reseat it on a bed of good quality sealant and expect a non leak result? Thanks
 
Yes for a while. Ive had good results doing similar. But as with everything needs watching.

Ive used sikaflex but my boat is held together with this and duct tape. Proper job... No idea :-).

Like to learn from the pros. Im about to invest in captain tully creeping crack cure. A plaster rather than a cure but looks OK. Comments lol.
 
unless there is something else to hold the acrylic in place you will need to use a sealant with adhesive properties. Sikaflex will do the job but do make sure you use the right primer otherwise it won't adhere. Masking up before removing from the frame will help and white spitit helps cleaning up. Remember that once hard it can only be removed by mechanical means. I did one this way and it certainly stopped the leak.

When I renewed the 'perspex' on my giot? hatches I was supplied with a 3M sealant / adhesive and etching primer by Keith Ryland. Worked (and still is) very well. I was able to take the opening part of the hatches home which made life a lot easier and helped the curing by keeping the refurbished hatches in the warm. A bit like a lot of jobs, it took longer than I anticipated to clean and prepare.
