Hatch edging - ideas please

Once my engine repairs are finished I need to re-lay most of the cabin floor, having removed the somewhat tired carpets prior to the repairs.

Cut into the floor are several access hatches, which were previously trimmed over each adjoining edge with carpet, so with the carpet removed these engage with the floor with a ~15 mm wide recess cut around the floor edge of each hatch to about 12mm deep. with each hatch being cut from 12mm ply, so when the hatches are in place the floor is flush. To allow for the carpet overlap there is a gap between the hatch and the floor ~ 5mm on all four edges.

I am now thinking of using Vinyl flooring (Lino) instead of carpet and want some ideas on how best to get a neat looking edge at each hatch. I will have to make new hatches anyway.

I also need to flatten the original areas of floor because the hessian backed carpet was heavilly glued down so the surface left is quite rough. I do not much fancy the idea of sanding because the dust would be horrendous. What compounds should I consider to form a stable flat surface to glue the new vinyl to, or would it be simpler to over lay with a thin layer of fresh ply, or even hardboard ?

vinyl should be glued onto a really really flat surface Trevor...
Either new ply or find another lining material. i'd go for something else tbh, sorting the edges of the hatches will be difficult...

Thin brass strip or angle would be neat, and protect the edges.

Scraping the glue residue off shouldn't be too hard with a carbide pull scraper, I had to do a complete apartment a couple of years ago If the access hatches have square corners, they could be trimmed to a clean edge and then edged with wood. Alternatively, cut some new hatches.

I did the hatches and boards on my boat before last with cherry and holly striped laminate. That required a reasonbly flat surface but I used epoxy resin to bond the laminate, which provided the necessary flatness. Perhaps that's the answer here, but I do like the softness vinyl under-foot offers.
