Hi,
I need to build three new deck hatches for our boat and am wondering if anyone knows of any designs on the internet. I am particularly having trouble thinking up a design for the closing handles.

What material? What applications (forehatch, main hatch, escape hatch). How deep do you want to submerge before it leaks? Handles inside & out, or is inside only OK? Does it need to do another job (window/ventilation etc?). How 'pretty' does the design need to look? Is 'functional' OK?

There is a link to a hatch design here http://www.woodenboat.net.nz/Workshop/Workshoptips/easyhatch.html. The gmatkin/design site is a pretty good place to start for most things.

Failing that, PM me & I'll dig out or re-work one of the drawings I used on my boat. As it's steel it may not be ideal in your case, but the idea could be modified.

Regards

Richard.

Sorry about the lack of info :) the boat is steel I am hoping to make the hatch lid from s/steel angle and perspex and weld flat bar s/steel standing on edge onto the deck for the lid to to close onto. Any ideas would be appreciated so I will PM you now Richard if that's ok

Cheers Stephen

Hi.

May I jump on the bandwagon.

I'm looking for designs for a forehatch in wood that would be suitable for a Halcyon 27. It's about 500mm x 500mm.

Thanks

Steve

I made my own 500x500 forehatch for my Fulmar from stainless steel and perspex. You have to look very closely to see that it's not a commercial model(sorry for the lack of modesty!) it's completely watertight but it took some work. Can send you pictures and sketches if you're interested.

I have just finished the traditional looking wooden forehatch for my self build. I am confident that the design is fully water tight.I could email you photos if you like?
