I would like to move my Hallberg Rassy 34 to Portsmouth Harbour. Haslar Marina stands out as my best option. I would be interested to hear others thoughts on the pros and cons of Haslar and the harbour.

I would suggest you telephone 02392-601201 between 9 and 5 and have a chat with Ben or Rachael. Berths, I understand are not a problem although dredging two of the fairways is ongoing at the moment.

Although not based there, we visit regularly because there is loads to do onshore for the family; Dockyard, historic ships, Gunwharf shopping centre etc, a short ferry ride away, and Gosport has all you could normally need for eateries and chandlers etc. There is always something to see around the harbour, with warships, ferries etc coming and going, and it has a marvelously historic feel.

Why don't we base ourselves there? If you like chilling out in a rural location, with peace and quiet, which we do, then it is obviously not the best choice. We have friends with a boat in Haslar who are very happy with it, although they insist on a mooring well up the creek away from the wash of passing vessels. Traffic may be an issue if you drive down at peak times, less so if you are not so tied.

Haslar has no lift out. Access via the A32 is never simple, although there is an alternative for those approaching from the North and East via the industrial estate by HMS Collingwood in Fareham and Lee-on-Solent. Once past Collingwood it's usually fairly clear except during the rush hour. You'd not use that way from the West anyway, at least not often. The Marina staff are excellent and there is a slip which allows motorboatists with trailers to haul out but nothing with a tall mast will get under Haslar Bridge. Mary Mouse, the in-house bar/cafe gets mixed reviews. That said it's actually more sheltered than the old C&N marina which can get bouncy, even behind the shelter of the MoD fuel pontoon. It's really convenient for the harbour mouth and Haslar Creek is well sheltered, I put up and drop my sails there. If you have a Deep Keel, the creek does get shallow up by the bridge at LWSprings. The on-site chandlery has closed so it's a hike to Arthurs or the one by the Casle pub near the ferry pontoons.

Haslar is very wobbly from wash and in bad weather.

Take a look at Royal Clarence - its protected by Rat Island so much more comfortable and its a much more pleasant aspect too - the only down side is a bit of a trek to the heads

I have berthed in Haslar for 23 years and just renewed for 2017. Principal reasons. Professional and friendly staff. Ease of parking. Quick access to sailing areas. Access to Gosport and Portsmouth. Happy customer. CBT

I love Haslar and been there 8 yrs. virtually no wash where I am and now the marina management have had extensive works done to replace the old wave screen, the entire marina is pretty wash free. The staff are wonderful.

I left Haslar in April this year. I had a year of the pontoon electrics tripping all the time. Over winter that was a pain as nothing on board reset itself after a power outage.

BUT... they are spending loads a money on new shower blocks, new electrics and the wave screen as mentioned.

And the staff are the most lovely!

Not had a bad meal in the Lightship since Maria took over. Great place.

EDIT: And freebies berthing at East Cowes on the IOW!

It has the wonderful and well priced sealift!

And Gosport Boatyard and other places are just around the corner.

Sealift is just for short turn-round stuff, scrub off and anti-foul. Try getting them to allow you to replace a cutless or rudder bearing. It's not even as good as a scrubbing grid. I did say "Lift out" after all.

I was at Haslar for two years.

I was on H pontoon which is constantly moving with the wash from pilot boats and ferries, as well as the military boats in the middle of the night.

I wore through a set of guard wires in one winter, through the constant movement of the fenders.
I burst several large fenders too as the finger pontoons are slim sided rather than slab sided.

I had a motorbike stolen. I had my pushbike cut off the railings by a member of staff, (they did pay for the replacement lock though)
I had a security guy watching my every move which made me feel uncomfortable and ultimately led to my leaving at the first opportunity earlier this year.
The manager Ben and Rachael are very nice and friendly though and if you get a berth down inside the marina (not up by H pontoon) then you will be well sheltered.

the access to Portsmouth is great, the walk into Gosport town for the chip shop or for restaurants is quick and easy. The Castle pub on the corner serves good food, Hardy's is a lovely place and serves excellent food.

Road access in and out of Gosport can be a bit of a pain in the arse, but if you go the back routes or don't travel in a peak times, it's ok.

The access to the solent is fantastic. The sheltered area next to the marina is also excellent for putting sails up or putting them away. Which is a really blessing compared to some other places, such as Lymington or Yarmouth where there's no sheltered place to do all the deck tidying.

It's a decent enough marina. it's got its positives and its negatives. For quick easy access to Portsmouth and the solent you can't beat it.
But it is huge and the walk from the car to the boat can be a long way, the drive there can be tedious and some people aren't all that enamoured with Gosport as a town.

I liked it enough to stick around for 2 years.

I liked it and had the pleasure of watching it being built. Ran a yacht charter business there for a couple of years and also lived aboard for nearly a year before going off cruising.

:encouragement:

Well, if that doesn't get you a discount G, I don't know what will! :D:D
