"Helping" swmbo with her Dayskip homework last night and noticed some alarming changes to the channel coastline.

According to the RYA practise chart 1, there are now two b****y great islands just off Berry Head, furthermore, the Cotentin peninsula appears to have been recently relocated about 25NM south of Salcombe.

Are these changes due to recent tectonic activity? If not we were b****y lucky on holiday, we must have sailed between the two islands without noticing them. Better renew our charts next year, just in case.

You mean mine are out of date?

Are you sure that the islands aren't something to do with the offshore re-fuelling facility, as noted by several participants on the Virtual Cherbourg Cruise? I can't say I noticed them myself, but you will recall that I was rather busy down below...../forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Could well be, three years ago coming round Berry head crash tacked when the depth thingie suddenly shot to 2metres. Must have been a nascent island or similar but gives you a wee fright in unfamiliar waters!

That's the same one I've got. Did you get yours from Beaulieu boat jumble as well? B*****d sold it me as the lastest "state of the art" cartography.

So that's where Cumbrae went to! Driving down past Largs the other day and I thought the Firth of Clyde looked empty but I couldn't quite figure out why.

Thought it was related to red diesel, Tony move France closer if you check the second chart, thus save fuel and countering the increase.

My swmbo recently did the same course with exactly the chart you describe. It having studied it I decided that I preferred it over the real thing. So how do we get those island there and shorten our duty free trips?

Absolutely not.

The hydrographer of the grey funnel line has simply been taking his time updating the charts after the war with Napoleon. This was a result of ruse-de-guerre stared during the Napoleonic wars to make the Boney think that England was in fact further away from France than it really is. Thus making the crossing to invade longer and causing more mal-de-mer.

The true facts were declared state secrets and cannot be revealed until at least 200 years have passed - around 2012 I believe.

So I hear, there is an NTM planned for around this date although cuts in the Navy buget could easily delay it a little further.

You should see RYA practice chart 2.
There is another group of 2 islands in Start Bay.

I can't remember them out there this year.
They will make the next Dartmouth regatta a lot calmer.
The area seems to be a new Solent in the making.
