Has anyone seen or heard from the S/Y 'Colros'?

Re: Update re the over-due S/Y \'Colros\', Newlyn - Madeira

Henry has since sent me an email at bsmith@getty.edu offering the weather data and I'll respond to him directly to let him know that I would be very grateful to see the data. Thanks, too, to simonjk, for the weather summary you've provided. I will email you directly too for the Atlantic weather records you mention. Everyone has been so incredibly supportive and David's family and friends cannot thank you all enough.

Re: Update re the over-due S/Y \'Colros\', Newlyn - Madeira

Keep us updated Barbara , and I'm sure this thread will keep popping up with the support of others so fingers crossed

Re: Update re the over-due S/Y \'Colros\', Newlyn - Madeira

Its very frustrating. Would really like to do something to help but don't know how. If anyone has anymore ideas keep me posted.

Re: Update re the over-due S/Y \'Colros\', Newlyn - Madeira

Tom , as long as we can keep moving this to the top , specially for monday viewers , there's a chance someone may see it , but it's a busy forum

Re: Update re the over-due S/Y \'Colros\', Newlyn - Madeira

Hadn't thought about that since it started , have you hit the notify button ,, never mind , it'll tell me when I hit it

notified , auto reply by Kim

Re: Update re the over-due S/Y \'Colros\', Newlyn - Madeira

Yep , amended reply above yours , scary when Kim sends an e mail , but it's automatic , fingers crossed now

Re: Update re the over-due S/Y \'Colros\', Newlyn - Madeira

up again , and hopefully now ready for the monday crew

sooner this goes sticky the better

GRIB is okay Henry, and is certainly better than nothing at all. The GRIB analysis can be 'smoothed' somewhat. but for what we are looking at here it will be fine. Barbara has emailed me so as soon as I have her postal address I will send her all the daily Atlantic information I have (analysis, sat pics etc...). This together with your GRIB data should be pretty comprehensive. I'm happy to interpret the data if necessary.

Simon

Re: Update re the over-due S/Y \'Colros\', Newlyn - Madeira

I've made it sticky, because lots of people don't use the viewing mode where a reply moves it back up to the top of the forum.

Re: Update re the over-due S/Y \'Colros\', Newlyn - Madeira

Nice one Keith , when I hit the notify moderator button and got the e mail from Kim ( automated ) I thought he'd taken to late night viewing too , scary . Anyway , hope some results come in soon

Re: A photo of Colros

Barbara has just emailed me a photo of Colros, which I will attach below.
This is another very long shot, but there is always a possibility that David might have put into some port somewhere, and for whatever reason decided to not contact folk at home. If this is the case, then maybe somebody on this forum might have seen the boat somewhere, and a photo might jog their memory.

She does look like a very fine, sturdy and seaworthy vessel, and her skipper is a very competent and resourceful sailor, hence I would very much like to think that they are still together out in the Atlantic somewhere.

Re: Update re the over-due S/Y \'Colros\', Newlyn - Madeira

Another long shot but you could try a thread on the Ships Monthly forum, plenty of serving MN guys have a read of it, maybe someone joining a ship on the Atlantic run could keep his eyes & ears open especially for this yacht? There must be some other MN forums? Numast maybe?

Re: Update re the over-due S/Y \'Colros\', Newlyn - Madeira

An excellent suggestion, thank you - I have just posted a note on the Ships Monthly forum.

Although we all are acutely aware that the area of ocean where Colros could possibly be is enormous - thousands of square miles - but lets hope that somebody sees her, or she makes land fall safely, perhaps on this side of the Atlantic if she has been drifting across.

Re my 'drifting across' theory - remember the Nicholson 32 'Compromise' that was abandoned in November while taking part in the ARC?
As far as I know, nobody has seen her since, and she has not (yet) washed ashore in the West Indies, yet the odds are very good that she is still floating, and slowly making her own way across the Atlantic.
Hence why I am thinking that perhaps Colros might be following a similar route.
This is assuming of course that she made enough distance south to reach the prevailing easterly winds which would tend to push her out into the Atlantic.

Re: Update re the over-due S/Y \'Colros\', Newlyn - Madeira

Was Colros equipped with epirb or any other type of self activating transmission device that might signal in case of distress?

I agree with Dyflin that any information given out to MN vessels plying the routes concerned can only increase the chances of a contact.

I sincerely hope that all will be okay and hope to read as such in the very near future.

Re: Update re the over-due S/Y \'Colros\', Newlyn - Madeira

I have been told that David did not set off with an EPIRB on board. He has a ham radio license, and he might have a ham radio on board, but I am guessing that if he did have an HF radio, something must have happened to it, as none of the ham nets have reported receiving any check-ins from him.

I am hoping that he is still afloat, and perhaps slowly drifting westwards. His little boat appears to be very strong and seaworthy, and David is (from all reports received) an accomplished and experienced sailor.

Re: Update re the over-due S/Y \'Colros\', Newlyn - Madeira

I have some more detailed info re Colros:

KUYPER 26ft All Steel sloop. Built Holland 1966. 18hp Volvo penta diesel (new 1992). This is a quote from the original advert. I think the yard was Kuper but we found out that Colros was designed by Lemstra Naval Architects, Westzijde 213c, 1506 GD Zaandam, The Netherlands. We think she was 6mm steel below the water line and 4mm above. There were 6 of them built for the Dutch navy but they never used them and sold them onto the English market.
DAVID'S WORDS RE REBUILDING COLROS:
"Complete rebuild of cockpit starting with moving the main bulkhead 15" aft, then fitting new stern deck and lockers in steel with small footwell and decent 2½" drain. Replace transom plating and some of plating below original cockpit floor. Cutting off and rebuilding part of the keel! Partly because of rust where top of concrete met plating but also to add a second tank under the sole, remove all concrete except that under the engine (oil has prevented any corrosion there) replace all ballast with solid lead - leaving space for chain in bilge below mast area - AND lengthening the keel base forward 15" so she can dry out without tipping forward. She seemed prone to lee helm before so I hope this won't cause weather helm - ballast ratio should improve so hope to carry more foresail longer anyway. Am adding 6" bowsprit to provide easier anchor handling - yes - fairleads each side aft of twin forestays should be easier than 'through the gap'! All edge tubes - gunwale and cockpit - replaced with stainless as keeping paint on these is then less critical. Stainless grab rails on cabin roof. All steel hatch edges and opening edges done with stainless for same reason.
This work is nearly complete; next stage is gritblast, repaint, (any comments on Zinga?) then rebuild interior!
I originally intended to build new in steel, but fell in love with the hull shape - having fond memories of Folkboats. She does sail beautifully and inspires total confidence. She's a good ton lighter than the Vertue so watching the load will be more important on long-haul sailing, but she's pretty fast for her length and goes to windward in a chop better than many bigger modern boats."

I'm looking for more/better photos and will post those soon.

Thanks to all out there who are looking out for David and Colros,
Barbara
