Has anyone imported things from Sailrite (in the USA) into the UK?

Yes we bought a Sailright sewing machine, hot knife, Dabond UV resistant thread and Sunbrella canvas from them. I don't recall the amount of import duty but there is a calculator here http://www.dutycalculator.com/new-import-duty-and-tax-calculation/. Sunbrella canvas is the longest lasing canvas and is not available in the UK although there are claims that some canvases are the same.

I have never been hit with any import duties when buying stuff from outside the EU. Perhaps I have just been lucky. For larger things I am lucky to have a cousin in America who makes regular visits and is very generous with presents.

I got hit for a set of boat plans from the US; Customs really made it sticky and it was a month plus to clear; But that was in Portugal, where they are a bit 'tricky'.
Must admit to a bit of repackaging from my bro in San Francisco for bits of West Marine stuff. Except my set of breathable foulies were wrapped up by his misses, who dutifully put the real price on the label. Still no customs interest...phew..

I'm thinking of buying a hot knife from Sailrite Corp. The price (£78, including 10% introductory discount), is much cheaper than buying the same model from UK suppliers BUT what is the likelihood of getting charged import duty on it?

Not sure what model you want but I got mine from Lab Tek Instruments - HC3000 model. Works well on the ropes I've played with, up to 20mm nylon 3 strand.

No conection just a happy customer..........
