Has anyone else tried multifocal contact lenses?

Try other brands of multi-focal contacts. The first couple of makes I tried did not work at all well for me, but eventually the optician put me on Bausch and Lomb - and they were wonderful - I had near perfect vision at all distances simultaneously - as tested on an eye chart. Unfortunately, they only make multifocals in my prescription in monthly disposable and my eyes produce too much protein deposits for them - I tried them out for a couple of months but had terrible difficulty keeping them clean and eventually got a bad eye infection that took ages to clear up.

I used to fly professionally and used multifocal lenses without any problems. I had good focus from about 3' out to infinity. For anything closer I wore a pair of ready readers over the top.

I do know that some can't get used to them.

U need one eye for each if over 50.
Contacts or lens implants or laser.

What is your opinion on Intra Ocular Lens implants, i.e. additional lenses, not removal of own lenses and replacement like a cateract operation.

In my case, with astigmatism and -9 shortsightedness, normal contact lenses are a compromise and laser surgery would be borderline (and I'm quite reticent about it anyway).

Hmm. You mean you used to fly illegally?

Multifocal (bifocal/varifocal) – unlike spectacle lenses where the user can use eye movements to view through a different portion of the lens and consequently a different focal length, a contact lens will move with eye movement. This means that a different optical system must be applied to enable the viewing of more than one focal length. There are several designs of multifocal contact lenses, however they will tend to have a poorer optical quality and cause potential loss of visual acuity and contrast sensitivity. Some designs are also problematic in bright light conditions. Multifocal contact lenses are not acceptable for aviation use.

I'm fortunate to still sve excellent distance vision, but my reading / close up has deteriorated very quickly in recent years.

For sailing etc. I wear a reading prescription in my left (non dominant eye) and find it works brilliantly. The only time it's not great is at night when driving, when red lights are not focused properly.
it took about 3 days to become fully comfortable with the system.
I have several pairs of reading glasses, corrected for the one contact lens, which still allow me to work comfortably with miniature resistors colour coding etc. depending on strength.

I find that normal distance lenses work fine for sailing. I wear varifocals at other times but when there is rain and spray about contact lenses are better. I don't have problems seeing the chart plotter display or the echo sounder as they aren't really up close and without glasses binocuare are much easier to use. But I do wear a pair of cheapie ready readers on a string round my neck for reading the instructions if suddenly something doesn't work or |I need to refer to the paper chart on the table below! At £2.99 if they go overboard who cares. I always have spares below too.

iam wearing multifocal contact lenses, it helped me a lot to correct vision disorders. Multifocal contact lenses refers to the combination of bifocal power, intermediate power, and single vision power.
