has anyone else marked their outboard?

I think that may be the way to go. Must be something that the potential thief can see and make them think it is too distinctive to make it worth the bother of stealing as they are more likely to get caught. Of course the downside is that people will think it is something driven by Mr Blobby

Quite right - where things like outboards are concerned, there seems to be little value in hidden markings - there are thousands of them around and you are not going to go inspecting each of them internally. You need something visible to deter a would be thief.

Am I alone in thinking that I couldn't paint my lovely little outboard in spots or with fluorescent paint?

Think I'll stick with traditional security methods and a good insurance policy. :)
