Hi there,
We are moving the boat to Oban. Scotland.

Will you please consider the options.

From Harwich Turn right, through Loch Ness.
From Harwich Turn left, Right at \sillys.

Boring, but it could go by road to north wales?

Whoops, 32" twin diesel Aquastar. (quite important)

What do the pannel think?

kind regards,
Les.

Up East coast and through loc Ness.....sheltered from prevailing winds but long hops, easier with a mobo, and few places of all tide refuge.

Along South coast and up Irish sea...need to wait out strong winds from south west, the prevalent ones, but lots of places to break journey at any state of tide.

Option two is my choice.

definitely not a right turn to loch ness /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. what about a left turn, north to firth of forth, thru` forth & clyde canal.

what are your air and hull draughts ?

Hi there,
Draws 3`8"
air draught 11`

Sea kindly hull
go any where wipers.

I would not need to rush. or hit too many dead lines.

kind regards,
Les,

Well, apart from the confusing rights and lefts. I'd first look at the distances. Though it looks simillar. AS said above the northern route leaves you with long distances between safe harbours.

I've done the Solent'ish to Oban a good few times, though not at the same time, if you see what I mean. Longest between all tide harbours, about 95 miles. But mostly much less. I'll give you the routes if you like.

Then I think I'd go round the bottom, much more to do and see. Though cant comment much on the East Coast. We did Plymouth to Conwy, earlier this year. From there to Oban is a doddle, just use the Crinnan canal.

Depends whether you are moving it 'cos it's got to go or making a holiday of it.

IIRC the Mag had an article on this sort of thing a few months ago and it worked out cheaper, took less time and there was much less wear putting it on a transporter.

OTOH if you want to do the passage then either a boisterous passage along the channel and up the Irish Sea or, possibly a quieter run up the east coast and a sheltered run down the Caledonian Canal. Having never done either, I cannot comment on the pros and cons of the two passages.

I delivered several yachts in the sixties between Ireland, IOM and Scotland and usually the weather was vile in the Irish Sea (at least it was when I was on the water).

Personally I would explore the transporter route.

Hi There, Haydn,

It would be good to have the passage that you used.
Thanks.

My gut is trhat i fancy the trip.
My wallet says just get it there, and play later,

Im thinking out loud for next season.
We plan to play, look and then move up lock stock.

kind regards,
Les.

Hi again,
Its makes little difference
BUT
the boat might get bigger.

We may be getting a 38`ft er

Soon!

regards,
Les

I've done a bit of that route,

Portsmouth to Humber (in a day)
And
Humber to Farne Islands (relaxed over 4 days)

I have also done a bit round Oban and the Scottish Lochs, south and SW

My preference would definitely be to turn left onto the A12, up the M11, A1 to Scotch corner A66 etc

Why....because you mention changing boats, I would want to own a boat for at least a season before I went on an epic voyage with so few safe havens.

Sounds a great adventure though, the sort of thing where you have to ignore advice and enjoy /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Where's Arney when you need him ?

can`t find the figures at the moment but i think your air draft is too much for the forth and clyde canal - i seem to recall its about 10 feet only.

Think your figures are too big for the Forth to Clyde canal..

Done the East Coast and is a nice enough journey ... We did;

Chichester, Ramsgate, Lowestoft, Grimsby, Scarburgh (by chance), Newcastle, Eyemouth, Peterhead ... and of course the Morray Firth, Caledonian Canal, etc...

Check if Crinan is open, they have had major problems this summer and they often close for maintainance in the winter.
If it is then the Channel followed by West coast would be a dream run in the right weather, and it sounds like the right boat for the job.

Many thanks to you all.
All inspiration accepted.

The next question must be,
Any one know a good haulage firm?

just in case.

kind regards,
Les.

I can give you more or less chapter and verse from Solent to Oban. A while since I've done the Scotish bit, but not much changes.

Let me know which you decide. It's a bit long winded if your not going that way.

Well Mr Rabbit

If you need one crewman and one competent cook for the journey - you know where we are /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
