Harwich to Burnham on Crouch or Chatham Journey reassurance

I'm not sure we should be encouraging the OP to try the Rays'n at this early stage in his career...... When I first started sailing around here I wouldn't have gone anywhere near it.
In a wind over tide chop at half tide blowing a hoolie with a 1.9m draught. Some call me brave, others know I am stupid, but, I can assure you when I did it with FC (1.2m) with Pete Cooper on board it was unpleasant. For hours.

2015 has been the year of being beaten up by the River Blackwater. First time was after the ECF get together in April 30knots of wind on a flood tide Ouch!
The second time was last Sunday 12/7 Only (?) 26 knots also on a flood. Wind on the nose and as rough as I wanted it (!!!) all the way from Bench Head.
Amazing how the short steep chop has the ability to be generated over relatively not a great fetch.

You would think I would have learnt something. Oh I have 'do not plan a passage with wind against tide':encouragement:

I only crossed from Bradwell to Tollesbury, that was rock'n'roll enough....

Hi Guys

Thanks for all your help, the trip turned out to be a success.

We left on Thursday afternoon from Pin Mill to Brightlingsea which was an uneventful trip. Friday morning we were up in time for bacon and egg sarnies before heading off in time to get to the Spitway 2 hours before high tide which left us a little bit of favourable tide when we turned towards Swallowtail Channel. I didn't fancy trying ray sands with the lack of experience, drawing just over 2m and also because we were having 27-36 knts of apparent wind and a bumpy ride.

Just before crossing the Spitway i furled the Genoa and motorsailed with one reef in the main for the rest of the journey. It was certainly a relief once moored up in Burnham. We then had a shower and went for food and drinks in the Italian restaurant which was very nice.

On saturday we enjoyed a very relaxed sail back to Ipswich in totally different conditions, with blue skies and calm seas. we managed to get from Burnham marina to Languard in dead on 6 hours covering 35miles.

Next up will hopefully be a crack at getting down to Chatham which will hopefully be on the 30th if the wether allows, and then a couple of weekends after that i'd like to try and get over to belgium.

I'll certainly be back on here regularly as your knowledge has been invaluable.

Cheers Guys
