harwich harbour Porpoise

I passed within a few feet of one the weekend before last in Sheerness harbour. We were travelling in opposite directions and by the time I grabbed my camera it had gone. I have seen them a couple of times off Sheerness in the past. Their other name is Harbour Dolphin, so I guess places like Harwich and Sheerness are the sort of place the may be found.

So far this year I have seen them in the Blackwater, the Colne, and in the Wallet. Previously I have spotted some up past Osea Island on the Blackwater.

Hope this works, below is a link to a video posted on a local website. Never seen them in the harbour before has anyone else?

According to Arthur Ransome, Jim Brading and the Walkers saw them from Goblin. I presume that means that they weren't unknown there in the 30s.

We saw a solitary porpoise in the harbour on both our way out and our way back on our two night mini-cruise to the Alde /Ore /Butley. On the way out it was near the first ship on Trinity, almost in the Orwell, and on the way back it was nearer to the Shelf buoy off Harwich.

A night at Iken and a night at Butley were both lovely, as was catching up with friends in Aldeburgh and dining in Orford. A perfect mini-cruise. Lots of seals to spot as well as the porpoise.

We saw porpoises on our trip last Sunday from Chatham to Ipswich in front of Sheerness and again just before Walton-On-The-Naze.
They are absolutely amazing, but they refused to stop for a picture...

Seals and porpoises, how can one not love the East Coast?

Just after WW2 virtually every reasonably sized boat around Felixstowe would be escorted by at least two.

I remember when I was a kid at our beach hut at Herne Bay in the 1950's we saw porpoises going by east and west every day, it was not even remarked upon.
Then they seemed to disappear. It's good if they are on the way back now.

We have a holiday home on the eastern end of Sheppey that has been in my family since the 1940s and my Dad use to talk about seeing porpoises here. In my 57 years I have never seen them from the beach but have now seen them several times off Sheerness and in the harbour in deeper water. I did see Dolphins leaping in the Swale a few years ago from the beach somewhere between Sheppey and Whitstable/Herne bay.
