Harvest Moon\'s Bottom

Hi, can anyone help me with this little problem. Our boat (ex MFV Harvest moon) is on dry land for a few weeks while we check out her shaft and rudder, also we are giving her a paint job whilst she's out. The problem is her bottom (Larch on Oak), At present she has a black tar based coating (which is in very good condition) Harvest moon is going back to sea in May. Question, what do i coat the bottom with ? I thought about attacking with a blow lamp but this will ruin the caulking. Any idea's please. On further reading of the forum I have picked up on Epoxy Tars, what are these and are they any good for wooden bottom's ??

My 30's Sharpie has a black bottom as well and the builder suggested re-doing it in Aquaprufe which you should find in any local builders merchants.

Sounds like you need specialist advicebefore overcoating to determine your next step.Most paint suppliers will guide you with a paint schedule,

Yes, this used to be covered in the little manuals that paint companies give out, back when wooden boats were commoner. I seem to recall that a barrier coat of primer was recommended. I am sure that a paint company will have the answer.

I would be reluctant to disturb a coat in good condition.

epoxy tar is great stuff indeed. My boat had its original coat on from the mid 80's and was easy to 'top up' when needed. There was no water ingress at all.

Over the top of the epoxy tar was painted a standard antifoul (with dried chilli added to keep the buggers off) and it all worked a treat.

My epoxy tar came from admiralty surplus stock and I believe was originally intended for submarines - nothing got through that!
