hartlepool to ipswich

Hi baggypipes,
I have never been into Hatlepool but have done the Blackwater to Newcastle and back a few times. The biggest single problem is bolt holes, in that there arent many. From where you are I guess you have Whitby, Scarborough, Bridlington and then you have to get down to east Anglia which is the long bit, with Humber shipping (and I was surprised at how much there is) to contend with too. Navigation is fairly straightforward, and depending on how far offshore you go, there will be numerous gas rigs to keep you company. My preference would be to take the direct route once past Flambrough Head and head directly towards Great Yarmouth where the bolt holes will start. Wells next the sea on the Northern East Anglian Coast is well worth a visit if you aren't in a hurry, but the entrance is difficult in anything northerly. Once past Great Yarmouth, you then have Lowestoft, Southwold (one of my favourites), The Ore and The Deben to explore (if time is on your side) before you are then at Harwich/Felixstowe (watch the shipping lanes !) and the Orwell which will take you up to Ipswich.

The biggest issue I think is the lack of bolt holes but with a bit of planning etc, its a strightforward passage. Good luck with it and let us know if you are coming down this way.

I did Ipswich to Hartlepool a couple of years ago, took 28 hours, can't remember the distance but has to be in the region of 250 nm.
Lots of lobster pots off Flamborough Head, you need to be 3 nm off shore, entrance to Humber very busy as we passed.
Very important to get the tides right for the Yarmouth to Felixtowe stretch.
