Hartlepool Marina info?

Best wishes for '10!

I'm thinking about moving to Hartlepool this year, basing a 26' yacht there for a full season.

Any thoughts as to whether this is a good idea? Security, parking, charges, access, cruising grounds and recommended ports to visit/avoid, overnighting in Hartlepool etc.. etc...

Not been there by sea, but stayed at the hotel on site many times. The marina is locked and seems pretty well sheltered.
There are lots of nice restaurants by the marina, including Creamo's Italian and a very good Chinese managed by a guy who looks like he's a refugee from a 60's gangster film.
Parking's no problem loads of room, and I never had or saw any problems with parked cars. No broken window glass around which is usually a good indication of problems.
However Hartlepool's a pretty depressed area so it would be suprising if there wasn't some trouble at times.
Loads of atractions, supermarkets & cinema close by.
 
Chap who bought my last boat took her there - he likes it a lot and drives quite a way to the boat.

He's on the forum but doesn't seem to visit much - try a pm to tyetune

He and his sister came to test the boat - lovely people say hello to them and Evenstar if you go there!
 
Hartlepool is a big marina as far as the E / NE coast goes. We were based there a few years ago for a couple of seasons just to get us further up the coast and into some different waters.

It's fenced with security gates and cctv, we didn't have any problems when we were there.
The car park is a large municipal one right in front of the marina but not secured but it's well lit and in front of Restaurants of all the usual nationalities, bars, paper shop etc. I seem to remember that a payment scheme was coming in for the cars but was free in our time there. The main road side has a large Asda so vitling is no problem along with all the other fast food joints.

The staff were very friendly and helpful and the locking in and out was not a problem, not really sure now but I think we could get in/out 24hrs except for an hour either side of low tide and we drew 1.6m. Any charges we hadd would be out of date, try http://www.hartlepool-marina.com/

Some places to go North are the rivers The Tyne and The Wier with the towns and cities on them, also Blyth, Amble, Farne Islands, Holy Island, Eyemouth and on into Scotland. South there's The Tees, Whitby, Scarborough, Bridlington.

Forgot, watch out for the Hartlepool Monkey......that,s another story !

I'm originally a "Monkey Hanger" but left Hartlepool 25 years ago - I still have family in the town and visit occasionally, the last time being only 5 weeks ago.
I stayed at the biggest and " "best" hotel the town has to offer ( I won't mention the name of the hotel) and while I was asleep in the room along with my wife a 2 month old grandson, we we burgled or would have been if I hadn't woke up and stopped the idiot from thieving what he could get his hands on.
It's a shame because the event ruined what would have been a very nice weekend and definitely confirmed thet the reason why we left Hartlepool all those years ago was the right thing to do.
The unfortunate thing is I have to go back to give evidence when the case is heard at Teeside Crown Court.

The marina is very nice by the way!!
 
Kept our boat there for several years.

Nice place and decent location. Never had any trouble from scotes (with which HPool is well supplied).

The only reason we left was lack of boatyard space. We waited for nearly 3 months to have our boat lifted and finally went to Royal Quays and had her in the yard the next day - so we stayed there.

The sailing is good Whitby, Scarboro to the South - Nthumberland coast Farnes Holy Island to the North.

As another said you lose an hour or two around low water otherwise 24 hour entry. If its nasty you can duck into Victoria harbour to wait.

I think there is some Tall Ships event there next year.
 
Evening, and a happy new year to all.

Moved into Hartlepool last Easter after our first season in Hull. Hull had good facilities but was somewhat limited in cruising area for a weekend jaunt.

Hartlepool has opened a plethora of oportunities for day sails including Whitby, Sunderland, the Tyne and Blyth without trouble and following on to Amble, the Farnes etc.

It is a locked marina with access HW+-5 (we draw 1.6 so allow 2 hrs either side of low water at springs). People are friendly, lockkeepers mildly eccentric (as all good lockkeepers should be) Pontoon access controlled by swipecard. Facilities acceptable but clean. Car parking is on the municipal parking area by the restarants, cars left for two week cruise without problem. Bars and restarants busy during summer but not intrusive.

Cant yet comment on yard as still in water. No onsite chandlery but Hartlepool Marine Supplies has good range 3 miles from marina.

We have had a good season and plan to remain for another.

If you make the move hope to bump into you when the temperature rises a little.
