Sadly, today I recieved the news that Spyros Gerekos, the charismatic owner of Harris Taverna in Kontokali, has recently passed away.
Most people who have stayed in Gouvia Marina will have eaten in Harri's.
He had been a close personal friend for nearly 25 years and his taverna's probably one the best in the whole of Corfu.
We celebrated our wedding in his taverna, and it was a magical day. Mostly due to his comical interventions, the speeches took up most of the afternoon!!! What a day.
His son, Harri, now takes up the reigns, and I hope he's a successful as his Dad was.
Goodbye Spyros, my old friend.

Update on Harris Taverna, Corfu

Thought I'd update you all (those of you who sail out of Gouvia marina) regarding Harris Taverna.
The son, Harri has made a really good job of turning it all around after the passing of his father. Spyros was THE personality of the Taverna and I suspected it would go downhill, thereafter, but I couln't be further from the truth.

The menu's changed, with lots of interesting dishes, that I've never seen in Greece. The best is the Mustard Kleftiko, but there's many more unexpected and varied choices.
There was an excellent Bouzouki player, a Courfiot who lives in Athens and he was amazing for the 2 weeks he played there. Apparantly he's a mate of Harris and will be playing again, this summer. Not to be missed!!!

Everytime we went there to eat, it was fairly full!! although I don't have to book, it might be wise to do so on a weekend.

Anyways, one of the best places to eat in Kontokalli. Well IMO.

Well done Harris.

Regards.

Sad news indeed, it is many years since I visited his Taverna.
Please don't take this the wrong way but is his son not called Arris, short for Aristides?
