Hardy Family Pilot - New Engine

Hi all got a mate that’s looking to replace his old unreliable Johnson 50hp 2 stroke outboard with a new one.

He was thinking of a 4 stroke - 30 hp or so.

Used mainly on the Thames but trailers it to the coast a few times each year.

What sort of speed could he get and what manufacturers come recommended.

Agree re Suzukis but also look at Yamaha & Honda. They all seem very reliable, quiet and fuel efficient. Unlike older 2 strokes they also don't mind spending a lot of time at low revs. I'd tend to go for the lightest at your chosen hp.
Don't think you would be able to plane with a 30hp on the basis that you would typically expect to need 50hp per ton of boat to get it over the hump. Not sure what the loaded weight of the Hardy is. If you are on the river then that won't matter.
Could save yourself a chunk of dough by only buying a 15 which should be more than enough for river use. If I was to use the boat at sea then I'd go for 40-50hp which should give you speeds of around the mid twenties. However, the engines will weigh rather more than the current 2 stroke.
