How very very sad am I, this geeky post has truly little interesting content so I apologise now. Why am I posting...? Not even sure. I guess I find boats being lifted quite interesting to watch, I like big machinery... I sound like a real weirdo..

But for those 3 people who look on here that have never seen a boat being lifted out the water in an uneventful manner (unlike most on youtube which then get dropped), here are a couple of video's of the uneventful lift of my Hardy at Hamble Point last week. The moving from Hoist to cradle and then move on cradle transporter.

My dad's boat was lifted at the same time which is the Contest (yes a raggie) you see in the other hoist being jetted off..

Got to add for the price that MDL charge for doing all this, its the one thing that is really good value from MDL

Act 1

Act 2

Act 3

Act 4

Act 5

Act 6

Thanks for posting Firefly. I confess I share your geek-icity and i don't think there is a cure :-). I don't want to drift your thread but shall we make this a depository for people to place youtubes of their own boats being craned? I have a few of my boats being craned over the years.

nice vids but i cant watch my boat being lifted! it just doesnt feel right!!

i still run cold when i remember seeing Aviator rocking on the forks the first time she was launched!!!

so James, now starts the winter work???

I have a lift out booked for Thursday morning, should I film it for you guys? any particular angles?

To be fair I could watch boat launching all day, our first berth at Pwllheli was adjacent to the commercial operators slipway, great fun watching the launch and recoveries, stressful for most at LW or with a decent stream!

Its astonishing how much power, and at what speed some folk motor onto their trailers! ( with much graunching if not straight! )

Nice thread and vids

Howard, got to say when boat was being lifted I thought the rear looked a bit low in the sling, then the hoist operator brings the rear up and levelled it up which made me feel better..

Indeed, the work does now start, plan to do a really good sand down this year (with lots of water so no dust before anyone shouts), need to replace main anode fixing bolts, was a job I had considered but then when boat lifted this year the anode was lose. Prop looking in fine condition, so for once leaving that in situ but will polish it up. Got to get to grips with trim tabs, they were looking awful, lots of weed and a lot of the antifoul missing. I think either remove all antifoul and polish (they are stainless), or apply etching primer prior to primacom then 2 coats of antifoul... Then the best bit, a compound and polish of hull and topsides, can't wait! :)

wow jfm, not surprisingly I have been totally out videoed by you! Thanks for posting these 2.

Couple of comments, on the 1st video, it looked like they lifted Match almost unnecessarily high before placing on down on deck, any reason or was that just for show
& secondly did they really weld the cradle to the freighter's deck? on the 2nd video, amazing when you think all that weight has to go through 4 tyres... I was waiting for a big pop!

..and just another observation having watched your first video, it is amazing what canvas strapping can lift!

thanks for your comments... do video and post your lift & I think any angle will do!

I noticed the staff were pressure washing Seabird in the later clips but it didn't look as though there was much fouling. Maybe a combination of the dark a/f and the resolution of the clips?

ok, on the case!

Yup it was a bit high. The crane driver was miles away though, so maybe he was playing safe. Dunno. The crane off at the other end in Spain was much scarier and they really did get quite close to clunking the boat hard. Missed by a whisker, phew, and I suppose a miss is as good as a mile though it didn't feel like that at the time. Alas I don't have a vid...

Yes they weld the cradle to the ship's deck. This is normal in deck cargo work- lots of stuff is welded to the deck then angle-grindered off at the other end. Both my Sq58s were transported with cradles and supports welded to the ship's deck. The cradle was also chained to the ship's deck.

the stabilisers on the sq78 muts make it trick to put the slings on!
Yup, but there is always a diver under the boat during these ship load sessions, checking the slings position before they lift. The slings dont float so you can drive into them with the stabs so long as you've told the crane operator to get them low enough

Looking forward to your video!

Interesting stuff, do they extend beyond the outer beam edge? I know there was a Grand Banks that damaged a stabilizer on a pile mooring in Pwllheli. I was suprised that it would be that adjacent.

Kwacka...........fettling wednesday (though looks a bit breezy on the forecast) and hoist out thursday 830am (poor planning on my part............its LW hope slings are long enough!)

A more geeky reply.

The lift out was due to a chap called Sir Alfred Owen, MD of Rubery Owen who built Hamble Point marina. One of our products back in the 1960/70's was a Carricon, it moved and stacked frieght cantainers. On a visit Alfred noted a boat was similar to a container, so had a carricon modified with slings, and structural devision build two runways out into the water at Hamble Point. The carricon moves onto runways, boat is moved in between runways into slings, lift boat, carry to dry land. There you have the start of it all.

The hoist in the film is still the basic design of the original Rubery Owen Carricon. The problem at the time was no one else to see a market for the idea. mind you they said the same about his marina.
