Anyone know if a hardy 20 pilot is underpowered with a honda 50 , will it plane ?
It's at the lower edge of being able to plane, most owners recommend 75hp to reliably get it up on the plane.
Not owned a Hardy Pilot 20, but it was one on our short list when we were starting out last year, talking with a few owners, 50hp and trim tabs and it should plane, most recommend higher power with a few having a lot more power ;)

As I thought, I would like a orkney 20 ideally but they are twice the price , what did you get ?
First Casper a Placom 750, 7.5m canal/river cruiser powered by a Volvo Penta MD7A with sail drive

Excellent little boat to begin with, needed a whole lot of work inside but a pleasure to sail with, a top speed of 11km/h and a cruise of 7km/h and a huge range from it's 120litre diesel tank and 4 berths
We sold her in November to another couple just starting out.

We bought Hunter an Ocean 37 last July which is why we put Casper up for sale, like the Hardy a semi displacement boat but at 11.3m and twin engines a little bigger than the a Pilot 20

Smokey old things, too much pottering around at low rpm

My wife was not too enamoured with the sleeping arrangement in the Hardy and then later Casper, which is the main reason we went for the Ocean 37, she is not too happy about it being single berths in Hunter but they are comfortable and it is a very spacious boat

We were lucky in that originally we had budgeted for the bigger boat, when Casper came up it looked like a good opportunity and something for us both to learn on, a bit of work and Casper was good, the main thing was getting my wife used to boating before we put down more money,
Only thing that worried us was paying two lots of marina fees if Casper did not sell, we had Casper for 14 months, and sold for what we wanted, so for 5 months we had 2 boats :)
Wish I had done it years ago, I sold my Check Marine Pilot 17 before I moved to Belgium, so had been boatless since 2008
