Has any one tried the flexible batten systems used to improve the comfort of bunks, advertised in one of the well known mail order chandlers ?. - Crew suffering from a bad back and i need a solution to keep her happy. Do they work ? They look simple to fix but are there any problems ? They seem expensive for what they are. Are there any alternatives?

We had the same problem. We purchased a product at the LBS made by a French company called Victoria - very French!

The product is called the "Victoria Star". It's a system of interlocking plastic pieces providing independent springs - very simple to assemble (about 30mins max) and it's construction allows for the wierd shapes you can get in boats. It also helps to allow air movement under the mattress to help prevent condensation. It cost £110 and we got enough bits for a double bunk in our aft cabin.

It worked? A big improvment.

email address is www.victoria-yachting.com

Best of luck!

When we bought our second hand 29 footer in 1995, the original 1978 mattresses were pretty well shot. We replaced them with 2 1/2 inch thick firm foam mattreses on top of which were glued "egg crate" foam pads which we got from a catalogue firm. They make for a very agreeable sleeping surface and are OK for sitting on. I don't know if such pads are available in the UK

Re: Maybe?

Pipe lagging has it's advantages:

1: Useful in winter during lay-up should you need to actually lag your pipes.
2. Wrapping round shrouds.
3. ??anti-abrasion device for warps??
4. Sponge to get to those awkward little places.
5. Breathing tube for use in an inverted life raft.

The list goes on! You could in fact just buy a couple and move them around the boat as the need arises/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

We had this problem on the Stern cabin bunk - used to wake up in the morning really aching. Turns out that cheap foam might feel comfortable initially but it gradually sqashes during the night. Solution - new decent foam - with a top sandwich of latex. - Same thinkness as old bunks - but oh so comfortable - (and quite expensive!) Advice and supply from C & J Marine near Chichester - not the cheapest in the industry - but quality service - and above all - correct advice.
