Harbour Porpoise

Must have been the day for them, I saw a large porpoise of Colne bar Saturday just before hw. Unusually there was just the one and was a lot bigger than the norm.

We saw two on our way to Heybridge Basin last week. We've sailed on the east coast for years, but have never spotted any before.

We used to see a pair of Harbour Porpoises in the Thames between Gravesend and Holehaven but I havent heard that they have been spotted since the enormous amount of dredging off Shellhaven started. I hope they havent been scared away (or worse). We seem to have acquired a single seal on the mudflats by Coalhouse Point though.

This site gives a bit more info on the types of Porpoises that we can see on the East Coast.

They like to know of sightings, and until they had computer problems recently, you could log in and see where people had seen them. Even places like Tilbury and Gravesend had them. I think the most popular place was off Southwold.

We saw a porpoise in that area on our way up the Thames from Queenborough in June this year.
