I know its an old topic, but on our weeks cruise just before Easter, the anomolies and pricing of berthing and harbour dues were brought sharply into focus for us again.

Day one - up the river to the Crooked Spaniard - free mooring bouy provided by the pub.

Day two - we wanted to go into Sutton for water to scrub the deck, some spares, and to show sons friend the Barbican area. No room, so into QAB £33-00. I knew it was coming and didn't flinch too much when paying up.

Day three and four - Pontoon midstream in River Yealm £15/night, but there are showers (£1 a go) and toilets provided. Memories of when it was £4-50. Thought about how we pay this much for a Marina berth and electricity in France. But its a nice place...

Day five Dartmouth. Town quay - £13.80 alongside including electricity, but you have to leave by 0845 next day to allow the ferries onto the berth. (If you can get inside the pontoon its about £20 and you can stay all day.) Bargain, but a bit of an embuggerance about moving by 0845.

Day six morning - thought we'd treat ourselves to the next night in a marina without having to move first thing. Moved to Dart Haven and found that they wanted the thick end of £50!!! We dropped our lines and left. Went up the river to explore, back on town pontoon for the night.

Day seven Salcombe. £21 for a bouy, and still NO facilities. Even the harbour launch apologised for the fees. Seems they went up 12% this year on top of hefty hikes the last few years.

(We haven't been to Salcombe for a while and when there are some locals living there again, we might go back. I don't mind people from London coming to the SW in their Mercedes and Porches - its just when they take over the WHOLE TOWN that it gets a bit much.)

Mind you none of the above gets anywhere close to the several hundred pounds per night I was charged once for a berth near Manhatten, NY.

Sadly I think it is just a case of supply and demand. As long as they can fill the berths they will keep the price up.

but £21 to hang on a buoy with no access to facilities is daylight robbery IMHO.

Surprised at the cost for Dart Haven, Dart marina is supposed to be the most expensive around, did you try there?

Salcombe is becoming a no go area for many boaters, everything is at rip off prices. Shame as it's such a beautiful place.

Sorry _ I might have meant Dart Marina - the one to Port just before Sandquay is the one we meant anyway. Talking to friends who used to keep their boat in Dartmouth, they said that all the marinas in Dartmouth are at a similar price now anyway. They said that they always anchored just off the fairway nowadays. Good holding but you still have to pay harbour dues.

Looks like it will be back to the old days.Mcmullen in Down Channel anchoured off beaches, recognised "roads" and went ashore in his dinghy to buy food or post letters.

This is all perfectly explainable, it is all to do with wealth migration, you see. Jimi has moved his boat to the west country and, in the course of so doing, transferred his immense spending power. The laws of supply and demand will now force commensurate cost reductions in the Solent area.,

Salcombe has been a disaster area in July and August for many years. I used to enjoy a visit early and late season, but ten quid to anchor, and no facilities, will have me thinking again.

Not really!

I picked up one of the three remaining (of six) visitors moorings in Coll last season at 20:30

Was woken from a pleasant sleep at 08:30 and asked for £15 by no less than Rob Wainright of that parish.

...and I have a perfectly good anchor - which I will use if I ever go back.

Jimi is rather coy about his profile. What is the name of his boat and where does he keep it now? Or if this information is secret under the Data Protection Act, a leaked picci of boat and location (not the man!) would be useful in tracking down the fugitive.
