I had a hanked on headsail on a moveable inner forestay. With the genoa poled out one side and the hanked on sail poled out the other side using the boom, the rig gave us two very pleasant trade wind passages across the Atlantic.

My rig is similar to Supertramp, inner forestay close to the furler. Both foresails up running downwind is a joy. Reducing sail to change course, you have three options, furl the genoa, jibe the hank on and drop it inside the genoa or sheet it in tight and drop it on the windward side. If you drop the hank on then you need ties secure it to a guard wire, lower in good conditions, upper if you have water splashing up over the foredeck, but in those conditions you would be better furling the genoa.

Just a few comments on hanked on head sails on mostly smaller boats. Here at East Fremantle Yacht Club the main activity is racing. Not big deal cost no object racing but just ordinary folk who enjoy sailing in company every Sunday afternoon with a bit of competition. Now our races are short like 2.5 hrs and weather is quite predictable. Occasionally people have tried roller reefing jibs but in every case have given it up for hank on jibs. The performance to windward is markedly better with correct hank on jib.
I can say of 20 odd boats in the fleet only one or 2 have roller reefing. My little 21fter has 4 jibs in the front cabin area but I very seldom call for jib change. ol'will

We have a hanked on jib which we hoist for downwind sailing on a dyneema forestay that is hoisted by the spinnaker halyard. Even bar taut on the halyard it would be no good for upwind work but perfect for long downwind sails when it’s too windy for the asymmetric.
