Do not waste your money - they are half the price of a proper Japanese outboard (of which they are copies) and not even worth that.

I have experience with them. I hsve stripped a couple down and the 3.5 air cooled are terrible. A friend of mine bought 10 to replace aging hondas on a fleet of bumper boats. Not one lasted a day!

I respect your views on the forum. However, do you have hands-on knowledge, as everyone said similar about my Chinese motorbike and that's been marvellous

See post#3 for some direct experience plus every "test" from magazines which identify their poor quality and performance. That is if they can get them running properly. Just because you have a good Chinese motorbike does not mean their outboards are any good. Have you thought about why they are only available on line with no service backup and no dealer network?

Far too high a risk to spend your own money trying to prove everybody else wrong.

And it is illegal to sell and use new 2 strokes for boats in the EU

Apart from the illegal sale of a 2T outboard in the EU, everything I have heard about cheap chinese outboards matches Steve66's experience.
Plenty of good stuff from China, but QC and a good warranty cost money, even in China.

Ah, slow typing again, compaired with Tranona's flying fingers...

I think you can still buy 2 stroke outboards for commercial use so there might be ways round selling them

You can in theory but doubt there is any commercial demand for small hp engines, and any sensible commercial user would not buy this product for reasons explained above.

Nothing illegal about using a 2-stroke outboard in the EU...

Only those imported before the change in rules. Note I used the phrase "sell and use" and perhaps I should have been more precise. Selling new motors that do not meet the rules - which effectively make small 2 stroke outboards illegal. This is all in the context of the original question so the meaning is clear if you have read the whole thread.

My understanding is that they are legal for commercial use?

That is true, but technically you would be breaking the law if you bought one and brought it into the EU.

I wonder if you did the right thing and declared your purchase and import for VAT reasons, whether they would actually take it off you?

Not so. It is illegal to import for sale by way of trade a 2-stroke outboard withion the EU but there is nothing to prevent an individual buying a 2-stroke outboard outside the EU then using it within the EU. S/he may also sell such an engine within the EU so long as it is not by way of trade.

Id like to see the wording of the actual directive. I think it is illegal to import a new 2 Stroke that does not meet current emmsion regulations. I don't believe it matters if you are importing it for personal use or for sale, but I would be happy to admit I'm wrong if that's the case.
