I have always admired how proffessional seafarers have the ability to make their boats stopin thewater whilst they chat or do seaman like activities,I suppose it comes from practise but it certainly seems a skill that needs to be aquired instead of running about without style!

If you're talking about sailig boats, it's called 'heaving to', and is achieved just by tacking the boat without changing the headsails, and then tying the tiller to leeward. It's amazingly comfortable when all around you is going crazy.
Peter.

otherwise, if not sailing boats but boats in general, the heavier and bigger the boat, the less (proportionally) it is affected by wind. So whereas a small boat get pushed around, a bigger boat just sits there. Although it sounds unlikely, a 30 foot boat is much more difficult to control in this regard than (say) an 80 foot boat - the opposite of road vehicles really.

Up to a point, Lord Copper!

Easy with a laden tanker.

Not easy with a pure car carrier (= seagoing block of flats).

Re: Hanging about (proffesionaly)

I know what you mean! I'm often entertained by boats coming into the creek here and when asked by the harbour master to hold station, they embark on a frantic circling kind of dance...

Yes, heaving to is pleasant. It all goes quiet, the boat comes upright, you can put the kettle on, have a snooze, have a pee, try and work out where you are etc. Surprised more people don't do it.

Is proffessionally spelt right?I had a 14 tonner which sat in the waterand you could walkabout no problem, she also had abig prop so quite handyto control, but not being a mechanic I lived in fear of the engine, apart from that I derived pleasure from manuvering under power as mucch as sailing! But never reached the coolness of the proffessional!

Try using "professionally". Of course, when observing a 'cool professional' at work, always remember the swan, who might look very serene from the river bank, but is paddling like hell under water. It ain't always like that, but it might be, and you wouldn't know.
Peter.

You're right there, Peterduck! I get told how how good it looks when I sail my (engineless) boat in and out but they don't know how much I'm pooping myself worrying about whether I'll have enough way on to clear the end of the jetty before the tide sets me onto it! Just saunter down the deck looking like you haven't a care in the world and all hell can be happening but people don't seem to notice..
