Handy pdf books and manuals site

To be clear... Torrents are not illegal.

That said, torrent sites are not very good for ebooks. In fact they are quite the pain in the rear end...

... Can anyone recommend me some books on Navigation?

No one uploads stacks and stacks of books/manuals onto the internet for other people to download without expecting some sort of return
You're not familiar with Pirate Bay, Kickass and other similar (illegal) sites then?;)
Not quite though, pirate bay et al don't let you download from them, they just point to torrents then you download the material from thousands or just a few other computers around the world. Then some add the files to their torrent feed so others can access them.

Used a lot for legit reasons , often you'll see a software installation package with a torrent link as a download option.

But also makes it easy to share copyright material so there's a lot of that goes on.

Though it's not really a big deal is it? The vast majority of material is way out of date, really don't think it harms the authors/publishers much. possible beneficial, "oh that was great, think I'll buy the new one". Who knows :)

Oh we're gonna get into one of THOSE discussions.

The relationship between copyright piracy and sales go hand in hand. The more copyright piracy, the more sales. People who are not going to buy won't buy, but those that would, will buy. The difference between Pirating and not Pirating is typically service and reliability. So for example I could copy a book from cover to cover but it won't feel like the original and it'll probably not turn out to be a decent copy. It may also not come with the extra software. The people who want that reliability (and that includes most pirates) will actually buy if not sooner then later. Of course this is more of a risk to much smaller/newer publishers.

...that said... recently trends have been that it can be sometimes easier to pirate than no service at all. For example the content may not be available in your area or may be translated poorly.

So the only real thing that anti-piracy does, is stop people viewing the material and reduces potential sales. Welcome to the 'Grey Quarters'.

I was just looking at chart table images on the internet and was delighted to see someone else with a paper based library

The very first thing I did when I got my boat was put a complete set of Arthur Ransome in hardback on one of the bookshelves.

Why do Hallberg-Rassy style their curtains after eighteen century ladies' underwear?

That trojan is 11 years old, plenty more newer ones around. Before downloading anything, it's normal to check the source.
I think you are confirming my argument that the content downloaded is almost certainly not free ? (I think you'll find Kickass has been shut down)
