Handling one\'s affairs

I am off, I am off, well almost. Just one or two more ducks to shoot and I'll be free to cruise. As of the end of this month, I will have no fixed address, no car, no liabilites, no tenants, no employees, no company, no accountant, no Gordon Brown, no.... and no-one to open the junk mail, deposit the occassional cheque etc. The umbilical cord is almost cut /forums/images/icons/smile.gif but to cut it completely would be impossible. Can any of you who've done it, recommend someone/an organisation to handle my affairs while I am cruising?

Thanks

Re: SWMBO?

Yes lucky, but the drawback is that my right-arm is abnormally fit. Good for grinding the winch too

What does bobt know?

I dunno, but I think you must know something I don't.
You're definitely one step ahead, whatever your boat.
Because (a) I (we) plan to escape like you and (b) I (we) have started but not yet completed a property related plan to provide the mazuma.

Congratulations John.
Green with envy . . but we're following someday soon!

Fair winds . . .

PS Got any property empire tips? ;)

Re: Property

Yeh mate, a few:

1: There is always a "right" time to buy property and NEVER a wrong time.
2: Negative equity is only negative if you have to sell. After 20 years, the property is yours regardless.
3: If you're going to rent out the property, it must NEVER be more than 10 minutes walk from BR/public transport.
4: To retire with a nice income, you don't need to be a millionaire.

Hope to see you out there somewhere.

Re: Handling one\'s affairs

Hi John.

My sentiments already voiced by others. If my boat had the capability to get out of this ditch, it would be fixed and working its way down the Portuguese coast by now.

If you are seriously looking for someone kosha to look after affairs, I used to deal with a company in Bedford Square, WC1 who do that stuff for companies. They rent out offices as well in case you need one for occasional visits. Let me know if that's the sort of thing you are looking for.

Re: Handling one\'s affairs

Hi Forbsie, how you doing?

That sounds like it's more than I am looking for.

I don't envisage more than some junk mail from that nice man Mr Brown and monthly bank statements. What I need is a first-point-of-contact (FPOC) ie should my dear senile old parents (whom live in South Africa) decide they need to get hold of me NOW, then they can ask FPOC and hopefully FPOC can raise me on the SSB or send a homing pigeon my way. More importantly, should I need part no xxxxx for the f"%ing gizmo which keeps breaking, then they can source it (they'll need a raggie/stinkie brain), pay for it and send it, then work on me for a refund.

Sound familar to any other cruisers out there?

You lucky bugger! I'm sure most of us would wish to do the same!

As to your request, there is something said about this in the book"Sell up and Sail".
I have a copy at home, and will have a look tonight.

Ship to Shore

Try Ship to Shore, the service started by Geoff Pack and run for a while by his wife, Lou Lou. It's now run by Michelle Miller, tel: 01962 868642, email michelle@shiptoshore.co.uk, web shiptoshore.co.uk.

She acts as your shore base for forwarding post, ordering spares etc. She can't manage finance or handle business affairs beyond collecting and delivering mail. If you need a financial advisor who understands liveaboard needs, contact David Pocock, 01727 758585. He runs a company called Finance for Property but hs has also advised and handled finances for many long term cruisers and has lectured on the subject at various OCC/YM Long Term Cruising Symposia.

Looked it up last night. The one I was thinking about is -
www.shiptoshore.co.uk
I see that JJ also quotes this in his post above.

Good luck, and if you get time in an internet cafe in some remote corner of the world, please give us an update. We'll all be envious of course, but we will be able to share your experience, however remotely.

Re: Handling one\'s affairs

My recollection is that Geoff Pack's wife used to run something like this, I think called "Ship to Shore" (Geoff was editor of YM who unfortunatley died about 5 years ago).

A PM to James Jermain should do the trick.
