Is there an easy way to work out the handicap of my Robert Clark, Mystery?. She was raced last week by my farther in Cyprus but as a result of the race organisers not understanding age allowances etc they compared her with modern race boats and refused to give her any allowances, she did not disgrace herself but she was unable to compete with the lead boats as a result. She will be racing again this weekend and it would be nice if she could compete. Your help would be much appreciated.

Regards

Ross

I understand that the handicap is what the race organisers say it is. Different organisations use differenthandicap systems. In a race organised by OGA, where boats may have been built over a wide range of ages, age may be taken into account. In my local club there is no allowance for age, so my 1917 fishing ketch would be up against this year's hot-shots; hence I don't race with them. This makes my insurance cheaper, too.
Peter.

I'm no expert, but maybe a line to the RORC would be worth a shot? I know they do operate an age allowance system, and their voice would presumably be persuasive with your local Club - assuming they use the same handicapping system eg Channel Handicap.

Hi, CHS does make allowances for age and do award quite a healthy time correction factor.

This is what allowed Sunstone to compete so successfully a few years ago in CHS, in the UK, its not a rarity, but the other hand boats of a similar or older age can also be heavily penalised.

Here in Malta, the organisers have moved away from CHS and are into IMS which because of its nature into measuring righting moments, internal volumes, height of stanchions and lifelines can even prohibit some participants! So its down to the small clubs who will use variants of CHS, and unfortunatly they will cater for the majority of the fleet.

sorry, but i have been racing in both camps and have never heard of a fair compromise.
