Handhelg GPS oe Plotter

PDA / Palms - Navigation

re this old thread, anyone looked at / tested on a boat using a pda - see that http://www.gpsw.co.uk are offering slot in receivers etc - are these likely to have the same limitations that a laptop at sea would have.

From my own experience Garmin is far the best. I have the 175 and it is brilliant.
Whilst at Southamption BS I spoke to a Garmin representative about their new handheld colour plotters. He said they can be difficult to read in daylight and that the black and white displays are better. If you have a fixed set then colour is ok as the resolution is higher. If you can get a used 175 go for it!

Re: PDA / Palms - Navigation

They're more resistant to vibration but they'd be just as susceptible to moisture and even more likey to be dropped / slide off the side (although the Navman at
http:// www.gpsw.co.uk/acatalog/P_NAVMANipaq.htm has a some sort of mounting thingy)!. My IPAQ's battery doesn't last as long as they claim either. Can you get a 12v charger?

Mind you, if anyone knows of any suitable software for marine charts that you can use on a PDA in conjunction with the GPS bits mentioned on the website then I'd say you've probably got a good compromise between a handheld and a fixed chart plotter.

I think I remember seeing something in MBM not so long ago. Someone out there must have tried it?

it may be of interest that MES are outing the 175 at £199 right now, presumably because GArmin are discontinuing it.......
GIven the above comments I would suggest purchasing before MES read this thread and change their terms to reflect the underlying demand...
"Some new 175's in stock - last chance to purchase ...only £XXX!"
lol

MES - Good Deal ( I hope!)
