I know MBY recommend the Magellan Meridian this month but are there any views out there on what the best GPS or GPS/Plotters are?

Might as well get one and find my way areound South Chelsea.

Received wisdom is that garmin has easily best aftersales and usability, magellan has quicker zoomin/out - but not sure now the 176 has come out.

Don't think we ever agreed abiuyt the "best" fixed gear. My furuno has twin screens and play the telly/dvd on one of them, and all the dull radar and plotty stuff on the other which of course makes it uttely fab, imho.

Was the magellan meridian actually tested against sevral others? Or was it just, yerknow "recommended" but not necessarily "more recommended" than any other one, but magellan asked to see if they liked it and they did?

imho a plotter is 100x more useful than a straight gps.

For hh plotters, there are only 3 proper marine plotters . Despite what Tim Bartlett might tell you. These are the Garmin old 175, the Magellan NAV6000, and the new one with colour screen Garmin 176c (also avail in b/w)

imho the 175 is clunky and it takes naff bitmap G charts. The Magellan 6000 takes CMaps and is much better imho. The 176c must be the best of all, becos colour and it takes bluecharts, which are decent.

I can sell you a totally mint NAV6000, in box with manual and cable etc. Mint, 2 yrs old. Can also provide some CMap cartridges, incl solent. Will sell at 60% new price. Motive - I am going to buy a 176c.

test was a non-comparitive by Tom Isitt.

Much more interested in your/forum's views on products after the rubbish they wrote about 'low-cost' travel.. never to be forgiven for that.

Yes , but we all recognise your writing style AND the subjects 'pon which you tend to get invited(?) to write. Cos you happen to understand them.
Anyway you still would have written an article like that 'cos you've been on an aircraft more than twice in your life.

AND they have my offer to do it for them next time free.

Re: You\'re dead you are

Well as they say..

If the cloth cap fits...

AND I bet you wear string vests on the Leopard...urrggh
And dunk your biscuits and spill sweet tea on the Teak Decking.

Oh NO..that's why the French guys play for London clubs , it's cos we're educated and got class and style down here..personally I'm a Wycome Wanderers fan. Went to Fulham v Spurs game alst night. Spurs fan overheard this and told me he'd never met one before. Told him he should be honoured 'cos there's only 4 of us.

He didn't understand.

Re: GPS

I'm new to the game, could someone explain why a plotter is better than a standard GPS, please?? And what do they think of the Garmin 152? (or is it 150?).
What price would one pay for a new 150/2.
Thanks

Re: GPS

In simple terms
GPS - have no charts. just gives directions based on co-ordinates you input. (slightly confused by fact that some GPS have simple maps). To visualise your position, you have to read off the current position from the GPS, and transfer to a paper chart. While a GPS will show you which direction you should be heading, it doesn't show if you are about to drive straight through a headland should one be between two waypoints (you may have gone off course earlier) unless you constantly refer position to paper chart

GPS Chart plotter - all functions of a GPS, but also have digital charts on built in screen, so you can see where you are at all times, see your course, bearing, heading etc on the chart, and can clearly see where nearby hazards, waypoints etc are as you move. Can set up routes by pointing cursor on chart(very quick, very easy). The advantages are many fold.

I started with a GPS, and moved to a colour chart plotter. Would find it difficult to go back to GPS (except my handheld for emergencies)

Don't know much about the 150 or 152, if it's monochrome think about going for a colour version, far easier to read colour charts (think about comparison of a chart and a b/w photocopy of same chart, and then about the difference the colour will make on a small screen - the colour is there for a reason)
