Having rather stupidly left my relatively new ICOM M1V Euro on the roof of the car and then driven off only to prove, that while well made, they do not survive hitting the road and being run over by a following car /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif. I was forced to replace the aforsaid set - need a handheld while training. Off I go this morning to Marine Superstore with a view to the purchase of a new unit. However, I came away with the Entel HT640 as it has the same battery as the ICOM and the deal included remote mike and case all for £149!!! A saving of £110 over the ICOM. What's more it came with a charge lead for 12 volt cig lighter and a carry strap. Additionally it has a much stronger belt clip which on the M1V broke with the level of use it had. Oh, and the screen is much larger and with need for glasses these days its much easier to read. Now all I got to see is if it works as well! But a fellow instructor has one and he raves about it.

I have those too---- the moments i mean!! I am thinking about a handheld vhf. Have a twin raymarine on board but a hand held is required. I may buy one like yours then Solitaire. Perhaps you can report on its brilliance etc once you get to grips with it?? Also, do you know if most people who have a fixed set and a handheld, actually take out licences for both? I seem to have read that we are obliged to!?? Roy

No..... I wd use it for the tender and if ashore, as we do a lot of anchoring off with the grandkids on the beach but often leaving folk on board boat at same time. Roy

I don't have any doubts about the units performance based on my friend's history with his.

As to the issue of a seperate licence - as long as you use your handheld in conjunction with your main vessel and tender you are not required to have a seperate licence. If however you take the handheld reguarly off you main vessell onto other's you are required to have a seperate licence. This costs £15 per annum and you will be issued with a "T" number. I have my handheld under a seperate licence as, in my instructing role, I move from one vessel to another. And I always have the handheld with me while instructing, skippering charter ribs or doing boat deliveries where a radio may not be fitted to the boat I'm delivering.

From what you say you don't need a seperate piece of paper - as long as you have a "normal" ships licence. You will however need to register the fact you have a handheld under your existing call sign.

Hope that helps.

In that case you can add your HH to your fixed licence.
