Looking in the manual for my Standard Horizon H890E I see a power saving mode in the GPS settings though its a bit opaque. I can't understand the difference between off and auto for a start, must be something about how GPS works that I don't understand.
The other options I take it are intervals between updating the position? Funny way for them to say it, why don't they just say "position updated every 27 seconds" if it does do that. Is 3 seconds on enough for a fix? I guess it would be or they wouldn't use that though manual says "time to first fix typically 5 seconds (@hot start)".

According to the manual the set uses 110mA on standby with GPS off and 130mA with it on though it doesn't say in which power mode, presumably off or auto. I'm thinking other than using it for a MOB situation 90% will be fine and a very useful power saving, even then probably 27 seconds sailing distance isn't far, it would probably take me something like that long to stop shouting "TO THE MUSTER STATIONS!!" or somesuch and remember to press the MOB button anyway so having a slightly old position would be more accurate.
