Handheld VHF call sign

It wasnt a big one but since the independant secretary too seriously his job of preventing such things, they could only chat about them whilst powdering their noses.

Mucho big fine and injunstion.

Funny. In our limited VHF calls with Clyde or Stornoway CG (and Oban as was), including standing by in emergencies, and once checking out a boat on the rocks, we have never ever been asked for our call sign.

Do people use them down south?

Sgeir,

Occasionally the coast guard in 'one particular southern area' will ask for a call sign as a subtle mechanism to a] vent their frustration at the incessant requests for a radio check and b] to keep the non licensed boats on their toes...

Other than that.... no!

I always called my self (or told kids to call themselves) "Sea Rush Mobile" when calling/ responding from tender. Never saw the need for using my callsign unless making a link call (not much point in spending a tenner on one of those nowadays!)

For onshore comms I have a cheap pair of PMR H/H which work a treat & have little problems with traffic as so few people seem to bother with them.
