I have low expectations about technology reporting in YM. Colin Jones will probably cover this well within the year in PBO.

I understand your reluctance to drill new holes for this type of d.i.y. project. How about using a tablet PC instead as this would have a much lower center of gravity, it would even be dropped into a near vertical display position freeing up the chart table .

Yes, I have started to think down this road, as the tablet pc seems almost 'made' for marine applications. I predict that it will largely come to supplant the offerings from RayMarine etc and become a control centre for everything, like you can sit down at the chart table, do a letter, sort out the months finances, send some email or sms, plan the next voyage (with trips onto the web for info on marinas or anchorages), chat on scuttlebutt, navigate... cook the spuds, etc....

And it should be simply mountable, to boot.
