Hand operated diesel pump?

Does anybody have any experience or recommendations for these? I am looking to fit a 5 gallon diesel header tank above my engine, filled by pump from the main fuel tank which is below and aft of the engine. The main tank outlet is 8mm ID. It looks straightforward to source or have a header tank made, but is it easy to fit and operate fuel transfer pumps? Engine is a Beta 38HP

Hubby just shouted across the room : Barrel Pump, remove the long telescopic drum tube and replace with flexi to tank you want to transfer. Outlet to receiver tank of course. He reckons that is what ships use.
 
We use two types on the farm:

a semi rotary - very heavy but lasts for ages

a plastic jobby, about 1 pint per stroke. Light and cheap.

both available from farmers "shops"
 
For a tank try Pete on 0783418286 he trades as alifab with another guy (I work with both) and makes tanks and radiators for the car/bike racing mob and does a lovely job, he's done stuff for boats before and very reasonable.

Silly question but why isn't it connected direct to the main tank via it's own lift pump? If the engine doesn't have a lift pump most of the facet electric fuel pumps can handle diesel now as they use different diaphrams, I use them with no problems.
 
Thank you all. I shall have a look at a barrel pump locally if I can.

The need arises because the lift pump on the engine struggles to shift enough fuel when the main tank is anything other than brim full. Beta's solution is an inline electric pump, which works fine, but if that pump fails I have an engine that dies of fuel starvation. Interestingly, the previous engine (Perkins 4108) coped fine despite using more fuel. More powerful lift pump I guess.
 
We used to use a diaphram bilge pump, just had to get a different diaphram that did not rot in diesel (avaliable from manufacturer).
 
We run a similar system, use the Whale Urchin hand pump with the "Nitrile Rubber" diaphram, Was an extra £5.00.
