Flying Dublin to Spain and can't get an answer from Dublin. I have a new sterling 60a battery charger to go out with me - apart from that only a few items of hand luggage. Will I get past security with this in my hand luggage, do you think?

'Electrical items' of concern seem to have batteries. When I phoned up they asked me the size of the batteries but couldn't get that it was a charger without batteries. Don't want to get caught having to pay for hold luggage at airport (Ryanair ....)

I've flown for work before with hand-baggage consisting mostly of cabling and electronic equipment. It was pulled out for manual search at Heathrow security because they couldn't see it all properly on the X-ray machine, but there was no suggestion of it not being allowed.

That was with BA rather than Ryanair, and the latter will of course take every possible opportunity to inconvenience you and extract extra money. But they don't operate the security checks so I guess you might be alright?

I had a drill chuck key in my hand baggage this time out from Gib. The xray spotted it but the searcher couldnt find it, when I twigged what she was looking for I took it out of the bag pocket for her. She took it back to xray girl, they both conferred and then said ok, the rules are apparently, no tools. She said benefit of doubt ok carry on.
So rules are, no tools, so should be ok.

if it really must travel with you i.e. no other options then I'd just bite the bullet and pay for hold luggage. Do you want to risk paying even more at the airport on the day along with the hassle of having to return from security back to the checkin and then having to use your hand luggage case to put it in the hold in leaving you with no carry on bag for your bits and pieces. Security are a law to themselves and regardless of what you, I or anyone else thinks, they will make their decision on the day based on their "rules" and who you get at the belt.
For the relatively high cost of the item concerned I think I would just settle for the peace of mind approach and then fill the bag with other things to maximise the benefit.
For me, the stress and worry is just not worth it any more.

Would have thought you should be Ok
You could take it out and put it on the tray like a laptop so they can “ see “ it better when x rayed .
Take it out of the packaging and keep the instructions etc in case you are pulled .

Sympathise with the confusion .
I bought a dive bottle and wanted to go to NICE , Ryan air as well .
So googled banned items , on there site , the CAA site re dive equipment, a sample of diving gear / dive holiday sites .
Got the jist it’s compressed gas’s that are the no no - fair enough , this was empty - not filled up .
Empty was ok as concensus of opinion .The fall back is allways the discretion of the Capt apparently .How that works who knows ?

So had a hold bag as kids too off we toddle - to U.K. airport cylinder empty valve open in the hold bag .
@ bag ck in girl asked ( with a pic of banned items over her head ) do you know if any of these are in the bag .
There’s a pic of a compressed gas bottle - so I say I have a bootle , buts it’s empty NOT compressed as valve is open - it’s used for diving - empty no gas in etc .
She says ok and process the bag .

In the airside sat having a beer and across the tannoy comes
“ can Mr [ my name ] please come to door x at gate y ASAP .
Keeps repeating as I find / follow the instructions.
When I arrive 4 armed “ officers”
Are you Mr [ my name ]
Yes I say
“Come with us Sir “
I,am escorted to a room shoe box shaped white cctv with a bench at one end with my hold bag on .The “ officers ‘ stand at the other end blocking the door about 5 M way .
“ open it “ they say .
“ Put the contents on the table “
As I reached eventually for the cylinder they twitched there weapon s
It’s a gas cylinder , open not pressurised I say calmly.
One comes up checks it .
Ok all’s well repack it Sir

That’s it .
I did everything I could before flying to find out what the lowdown was carrying dive cylinders ,
Remember there’s other sports , golf , skiing , cycling and even shooting kit going in the hold

I've got the computer off an old autohelm through Dublin in the past. They did perk up but once they realised there were no batteries they were relaxed about it. But of course, there's always an element of it being pot luck.

You'll be fine. When I'm carrying equipment that might flag up, I take it out of the bag before Xray and say, "it's just a (insert item here) but it might flag up on the screen" I've carried all kinds of spares to the boat and never had a problem.

Can't see that being a problem at all, as others have said when you fill a hand luggage bag with electronics/cables/batteries it often gets searched but I've never had a problem.
My bag has had 4 or 5 gps's power supplies chargers, hand held VHF's with chargers and batteries all hiding behind two laptops. In the X-ray you can't make out what they are so they search the bag.
But I was stopped and refused a jar of chutney, as it was deemed a liquid.

I once bought a new gas cooker for the boat took a flight to Greece cheque in told me you cant take a gas cooker on board as they are full of gas?

I had all sorts of fun with a sextant..... The security folks had never seen one before, so it got taken out of its box and prodded and examined at Preveza, Gatwick and Barbados. Each time they wanted to know what it was, how you used it and why was I using it now gps was available. Barbados was the best, I had half the security crew want to have a go, taking sights off the signs in the hall. Certainly brightened up an otherwise dull experience.
