I bought a handheld icom ic-m23 last year.
We have just been out for a 5 day break on the boat and used the radio several times over 4 days travelling. The battery indicator remains very high - hardly used any energy. No issues with communication on low power despite obstructions - on the River Trent.
The icom ic-m23 doesn't have gps which may be why the battery lasts so well.
