Going to be replacing u/s rev counter on engine panel. To set up need to get a hand held rev/tachometer to measure engine revs to set up new rev counter. Either a contact or non, not bother which.
As only going to be used once, hopefully, looking for any advice or reccomendations on which one to get. As when looking at ebay/amazon they at plenty around. As only going to used once looking for a cost effective (cheap) one.
Cannot hire one as will be takeing to Spain.

Thanks

Hi, can't help you with a hand held tacho but i did the same job and used my phone! I used an app called "RC Tachometer - True RPM" (I use Android, don't know if it is available for iPhone). Set the app to number of cylinders and 4-stroke. However, you have to set the max and minimum expected speed on the app and if these are set too wide apart you will not get the right reading, which is why some of the reviewers of the app complain. Start with idle speed and set min to, say, 700 and the max to 1000, or whatever gives to a close window to your known idle speed. Then adjust your new tacho to match the rpm shown on the app which will stabilise after a while. Then increse revs until your new tacho reads, say, 2500, set the app min and max to 2300/2700, and fine tune the adjustment. Worked for me.

I didn't know you could use your phone. I bought this one last year to check my engine revs as I don't have one in the instrument panel. The provided reflective tape wouldn't stick to the engine pulley so I dabbed a bit of white paint on it. It worked.

I bought one for less than a tenner on eBay. It works fine on my 2gm20. The sticky reflective tape stuck ok to the pulley after sanding and cleaning it.

Ditto - used an inexpensive Ebay optical rev counter on a 3GM30- found the indicated idle speed of 850 was about 700 ! Adjusted easily and much improved behaviour!
