So switched on today and it tells me it's busy on every Chanel is it knackered

I don't want to teach granny to suck eggs, but is it possible that the "monitor" function has been inadvertently activated? That would effectively leave the squelch control fully open all the time, and could give the effect you describe.
Just a thought
