Hand held GPS recommendations

How do you cope with maps - I have used a 3g iPad before but if outside network coverage - which is often the case when geocaching it doesn't work....

Whatever you buy, If you want to use the hand held on the boat, it maybe worth checking if it has "heading Damping"

I have used an IPhone in a waterproof armoured case very successfully, same goes for my iPad in its own armoured waterproof case, iphone was a bit easier to see in the Sun. Buy the right Navigation apps and you do not need a phone signal, you just download all the charts you need when you buy the app.
This year I am looking forward to trying out my new phone, I have crossed the Gulf to an android phone, because the Sony Xperia Z1 is A) cheaper to get than an Iphone and B) it's waterproof. I bought it it's first navigation app which looks at least as good as anything I found for the Apple devices. The display is also brighter and the battery is much better than the IPhone.

I have read reviews from walkers for GPS devices, one theme that tended to run through the reviews is that touch screens are a problem, with GPSs in bags and pockets being turned on, reprogrammed or reset by objects in pockets etc. Many touch screens are unuseable when covered with rain/spray. Also gloves can give you problems. However I don't remember this being a problem with the iphone or ipad. The Sony hasn't been used anywhere wet and nasty yet, so time will tell, as long as my dodgy knee let's me sail this year!
