Hand Held Anemometer

I have seen the prices from the chandlers, but as I was curious about actual wind speeds at home I bought one off e-bay. If anyone else wants one this model seems to be pretty good. Not the cheapest, but it works nicely, and revealed that one of my computers fans is on a go slow! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271262053583?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
Although it claims to be suitable for sailing, windsurfing etc, apart from 90% humidity, it says nothing AFAICS about being waterproof. Is your device at all waterproof?

I doubt it, and I don't think any of the cheap ones are, including some of the chandlery offerings. I mainly wanted it for home use, and as a backup on the boat, for which use it is best to remember that wind speed at masthead level is usually greater than at deck level. It would be possible to put my one in a plastic bag with a rubber band round the "neck" and only the spinner part exposed to the elements. The cup type are omnidirectional and probably best for accuracy, but cost much more, and are more vulnerable to damage.
