Yesterday I thought I'd head for Southampton Water and potter up to have a quick look at the outer pontoons at SIBS.

Quite an interesting day - saw the Waverley tied up just the other side of the ferry terminal from Mayflower Park plus various interesting bits of shipping. Not many punters on the pontoons at 6 o'clock though.

I have just had AIS added to my chartplotter and it's quite an interesting effect, seeing so many ships in what appears on the screen to be a small area.

I was quite pleased to hit 17 knots and 2,400 revs which is pretty optimal for my boat and engines. I think the polishing of my props has made a significant difference.

What pleased me rather less, though, was being used as a target by a mid sized sports cruiser - Targa 38 or similar. Between Hook and Hamble Point I was heading up Southampton Water at 13 knots when I was overtaken by this fine craft close enough to read the tattoos of the four man crew. But sadly, I couldn't read the boat's name because one of the crew was standing on the swim platform spreadeagled over the name. Hey ho, I thought - bit of a misjudgment. And then 200 metres ahead they turned and circled round me again laughing their heads off before heading off up the Hamble. Very funny and amusing.

You make it sound like they deliberately came to look for you, wash you about and then go back .

Could you have unwittingly caused them a wash issue while they were refuelling or putting fenders out or something ?

Could it have been a seatrial ?
When I have been out on sea trials it is amazing what Salesmen come out with from the Hamble and the Norfolk Broads (exempt from 5 mph speed limit sign)

Quote as he insisted we open up past the raggies

"well everyone chooses the boat they want to go to sea in" smirk

I don't think I could have caused them a wash issue because the nearest I got to anyone was to a tug and tow and a redjet when I crossed the Thorn Channel. The wash didn't bother me. It was just all so unnecessary and unseamanlike.

Maybe a scuttleburk booked a seatrial just to seek revenge on any mobo, has Dylan got an alibi :D

your comment about it not being Seamanlike is interesting. I totally agree with you, their actions were clearly not seamanlike, however I would surmise neither were they. The fact that with £20k in the bank (or less) you can go out an buy a boat capable of 30knts, then without any qualifications or having ever been to sea before you can get in that boat and make merry hell.

I am someone who has sailed all my life with my Dad who is of the old school & he taught me everying regarding the rules and regs of the sea, how to behave on the water, moor up, never to tie up over someone else warps, how to slip a mooring at 5am in total silence....and so much more......... may sound ridiculous and probably make me sound a pompous arse, but these sorts of twats frankly just ruin it for me...

...rant over... sorry!

sometimes Hamble is just a nasty place to be! usually sunday evening when everyone is coming home!!

i have been pinched up so much in the channel before that i have resorted to giving a verbal education to the offending "helmsmen"! i know we are a big fender but i wouldnt do it to you would i!

at the risk of starting a slanging match, in my experience, some of the worst offenders are the SB3 fleet who seem to think its acceptable to take the entire river up so they can get to the bar first and then trample over peoples boats with complete disregard. Ben, you must have seen that at HYS!!!

Yes, in fact recently one took a chunk out of my rubbing strake, quite a big chunk, I know these things happen, I dont mind, I wouldn't ask for money, I'd take it on the nose but I think they should apologise. That gets my piss boiling.

Mine gets clambered all over, and sometimes used to attach the crane rope! But I dont pay much for the berth....so far damage and inconvenience is a lot less than the full berth cost.

The stuff that costs £20k might do 30 knots but it barely makes a ripple compared to the stuff with four noughts after that figure ,which have the capacity to really throw everybody else around if not used with care.
Unless you started off with a small boat it is very difficult to comprehend how being passed at close quarters by a big fast MoBo can ruin your day.
Only thing to do if you have enough warning is to turn into the wash and wait.

Even a 28fter creates quite an impressive wash if doing 14kts and you are close enough. The JetSkiers seem to like it :)
